ELMGREEN & DRAGSET AT Astrup Fearnley Museum

‘Biography’ presents a wide selection of works from Elmgreen & Dragset’s complex universe, including sculpture, performance and interactive installations. Works from the late 1990s onwards will be shown together with recent projects, and all together they will create a unique insight into the artists’ oeuvre. Elmgreen & Dragset consider an exhibition to be a work of art in itself, with all its narrative, choreographic and social possibilities and ‘Biography’ will examine the very conditions of exhibiting.

Works that initially arrived from very different contexts are here brought together and the new constellations of works generate altered readings and additional layers of meaning. When walking through the museum, one will experience environments which occur very realistic, just in order to end up in almost surreal and other worldly scenarios elsewhere in the exhibition. A durational live act is juxtaposed with a series of wall pieces, and existing sculptures find their place in the context of new site specific environments. Part of the museum’s main exhibition hall is transformed into a gay nightclub, where the public encounter the remnants of a party, witnessing an activity going on prior to the opening of the exhibition. Additionally, areas of the museum that are not normally used as exhibition spaces are included in Elmgreen & Dragset’s staging. KEN PRICE AT MATTHEW MARKS GALLERY

Famous for his diminutive sculptures, often small enough to hold in one’s hands, Ken Price was long interested in making larger works. As early as 1967 he made drawings of over-life-size sculptures set in imaginary landscapes. It was not until 2006, however, that he exhibited his first large work, the seven-foot-tall Bulgolgi. By 2009 he had finished three more large sculptures, and he completed five additional large sculptures before his untimely death in 2012.

For over fifty years Price was a constantly inventive artist, continually changing the forms, surfaces, colors, and shapes of his sculptures. The bulbous forms of the last large sculptures, made at the end of his life, are sanded to a smooth perfection and then lacquered in iridescent colors that augment their seductive power. Alex Kitnick writes in his catalogue essay, “Price’s work shape shifts; it morphs. It always seems on the verge of turning into something else, of letting go, of relaxing or skirting across the floor. A contour of his could suggest almost anything.”

Atelier Van Lieshout, Andrea Branzi, Humberto & Fernando Campana, Wendell Castle, Ingrid Donat, Vincent Dubourg, Lonneke Gordijn & Ralph Nauta, Joris Laarman, Frederik Molenschot, Marc Quinn, Rick Owens, Charles Trevelyan.

Entitled Organic, this new exhibition presents artworks of 12 designers, all characterized by their inventiveness, as well as their vast range of colours and materials employed here.

Inspired or created from vegetable, animal or organic shapes and textures, these works intend to highlight nature’s aesthetic dimension, as can be seen from the Campana Brothers’ Pirarucu’s skin (giant Amazonian fish) buffet. The artists have imagined functional sculptures whose shapes refer to the complexity of the organic reality, thus inventing a new vocabulary through their reinterpretation of nature’s elements.
