Danish-born Maria Rubinke’s (1985) small porcelain figures are reminiscent of the illogical compositions of surrealism, transforming the character of what are traditionally charming and passive objects into expressions of more taboo feelings that oscillate between desire and sadism.
It is true that the artistic process of taking a symbol of childhood and innocence and mutilate it with the atrocities of a neurotic adult brain is nothing uncommon.
However, we must admit the fact that Maria Rubinke did it beautifully. First of all, her realistic view is strikingly touching. Then, the way she played with colors is simple but effective, resembling the scene of the red gabardine in Schindler’s List.
Emerging Danish ceramicist Maria Rubinke blends the childlike and innocent with the grotesque in her sculptural work, creating pristine porcelain toys and corrupting them with streams of red glaze emanating from rips and tears in their anatomies. The porcelain toys become biological beings whose visceral injuries can be difficult to look at despite the chubby-cheeked figures’ adorable countenances. Elements of the grotesque and the cute break down, pulling the viewer between these opposing poles. Let’s take a look at some of Rubinke’s sculptures below.

Ever imagined a sculpture of a Buddhist with a mechanical element that would make it move? South-Korean artist Zang Zi Won melted together these two very different areas. While having a pensive face, for example, the sculpture will be activated by a device that moves it. The contrast is even stronger due to the white color of the material and the clean and very complicated robotic device.

complex.com

Apparently at the core of the project, the artist is making a statement about decision-making and the boundary between mechanical though and spiritual inspiration.

“The natural human features of Wang’s ‘post-human’ or ‘post-person’ sculptures with its serene and meditative expression are juxtaposed against the disjointed mechanical components…At the core of Want’s works is the issue of decision making- the emotive human decisions against the coded and system judgments made by machines.”

Prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami recently launched his latest exhibition, Arhat at Los Angeles’s Blum & Poe – coinciding with the world premier of his first live-action feature film, Jellyfish Eyes.

Melding together a myriad of styles, the exhibition brings together the common juxtaposition seen in his work — East meets West, historical with the contemporary — while also dabbling with various methodologies and abstract narratives.

www.hypebeast.com
Takashi Murakami, Arhat at Blum & Poe Gallery

Murakami’s longstanding interest with Japanese nihonga painting and animation is evident, often infused with a stark sense of peculiarity, sometimes completely at odds with the original art form. Hence Arhat – which in Sanskrit translates to “a being who has achieved a state of enlightenment” — on the one hand conjures recognizable imagery, yet it also allows passage foreign lands where obsolete Buddhist monks confront decay and death with demonic monsters.

Murakami’s versatility is on show too; with bright installations from his Flowers & Skulls collection offering an optimistic counterpoint in another room. Elsewhere, mounted sculptures and a series of painted self-portraits populate the show room, showing the artist’s diverse mastery of content and culture. Arhat will run from April 13 to May 25, make sure you drop by if you’re in town.

Inspired by the Rencontres d’Arles, the Kyotographie festival presents eight photographers: Eikoh Hosoe, Onishi Seiwemon, ShiroTakatani, Tadashi Ono, Malik Sidibe, Kate Barry, Nicolas Bouvierand especially Naoki.

The latter had been introduced to the public by Chanelin Chanel Nexus Hall ( the creative capitalism is definitely becoming increasingly transaesthetic).

But back to Naoki, who could easily pass for a trendy young photographer, but he is a real artist born in 1950. He studied in the US, originally aspired to become a painter, later shifting to photography because of his affinity for working with people.

After flourishing as a photographer in the fashion mecca of Milan and London, he returned to Japan in 1987. He established a commercial agency in Tokyo, the first of its kind in Japan, called Face to Face, for the management of models, photographers, and hair- and make-up artists.

In 1995, he published a photography book titled “Ordinal”, accompanied by exhibits in Tokyo and Paris. Naoki held the photo exhibit “Summer Diary” in Sifinos at the Logos Gallery in Shibuya Parco in 2008, and the exhibit “Shibuya Kawaii Style” at the Blitz Gallery (Art Photo Site Tokyo) in 2009.

His ongoing theme is to portray 21st century Japanese girls, as someone who’s shot fashion internationally, and seen many models to grow up over many years. He now trains models, photographers and does not seem to have lost an ounce of originality that characterized his early work, depicting the Japanese girl of twenty-first century.

The purpose of his latest series Mood9 Girls pictures is to “show the absolute beauty”, he said. We’ll let you judge for yourself.
