“As a designer I feel like an explorer travelling the world out of curiosity or being sent with a mission, investigating, asking questions and making connections.”

A fallen tree can be very well used to sit on. If you should add some back classic bronze seat, this fallen tree can become a real piece of furniture, a successful combination between nature and culture. Jurgen Bey, the designer of this work, clearly expresses the idea that it is ridiculous to transport trees when they can be used locally.

photo trendland.com

Who is Jurgen Bey? Visionary designer Jurgen Bey is a Dutch who likes to deal with things at a superio level. Renowned for his truck bench made out of a tree trunk with classic back seat, cast in bronze, Bey is known for works such as Light Shade Shade, a lamp made out of mirror reflecting its surroundings during the day, becoming a chandelier when turned on, or Ear Chairs, some large armchairs with giant ears that allow people to have private conversations in public spaces.

photo dezeen.com

Deeply interested in the emotional side of things, the Dutch designer Jurgen Bey creates images and new works directly making you think but also talk about the value of modern industrial production. His work stands at the boundary between art and design, treating the environment as a treasure waiting to be discovered. Most times Bey takes the time to observe people’s actions and discover certain intrinsic qualities that are often overlooked. To achieve this he ventures in a journey beyond the ordinary, creating his own way, an original way.

If you watched the international architecture and design scene in the last years, you certainly know about Zaha Hadia, the first woman in history who won a Pritzker award, an equivalent of the Nobel prize in architecture, and one of the most prolific architects in the world, who continues to come up with the most innovative architectural structures.

Last year she completed the monumental and futuristic SOHO Galaxy in Beijing – consisting in four towers linked between them in platforms – Zaha Hadid was named winner in the project started by ArRiyadh Development Autority to build the future metro station King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).

photo www.dezeen.com

20434 square meters, six platforms on four levels, six metro lines that connect the entire city. The design is described as below:

“The resulting configuration is a three-dimensional lattice defined by a sequence of opposing sine-waves (generated from the repetition and frequency variation of station’s daily traffic flows) which act as the spine for the building’s circulation. These sine-waves are extended to the station’s envelope and strictly affiliated to its internal layout, translating the architectural concept to the exterior.” (Press release – Zaha Hadid Architects)

photo www.dezeen.com

According to the architect, the curve forms of the structure are inspired by the soft lines of sand dunes in the desert, and most of the structure will be made of marble with walls having gold thus becoming the most expensive and modern metro station in the world sustained by the contribution of king Abdullah himself.

Another innovation is the design of the entrance in the metro station. The project states that above the entrance will be built a building with several levels in a futurist design where there will be stores and a parking lot. It will be very functional since it will avoid massive congestion.

photo www.dezeen.com

And when it comes to lightning, the project has in plan an ecologic system based on using mainly the sun light and a special roof taking care that the temperature would be constant and at a optimum level.

photo www.dezeen.com

People around the world can’t stop talking about the Leonardo DiCaprio movie that was recently presented in New York theatres, and the interior design world is showing off their takes of The Great Gatsby.

Release of the movie, which opened May 10, was high, thanks in part to a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, the story’s narrator. It also was shot in 3-D, features costumes by Miuccia Prada, and has a soundtrack created with hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. “Jazz was such a revolution in that era,” says the Australian-born filmmaker – Baz Luhrmann – “so I looked to a blend of jazz and hip-hop to help the audience understand through their own receptors what it might have been like to live during that time.”

Gatsby Mansion’s digitally enhanced exterior, modeled after Long Island’s North Shore estates – photo www.architecturaldigest.com

If the filmmaker has taken liberties in terms of musical convention, we cannot say the same thing about the interior design process of the mansion. He and his wife – designer Catherine Martin – strove for greater period authenticity – a dazzling version – in the lavish sets. Forty-two individual sets were created in and around Sydney. Fourteen weeks it took the team just to build, paint and decorate Gatsby’s mansion: grand ballroom, library, master bedroom, entrance hall and terrace as well as the garden.

Gatsby Balcony – Design by Catherine Martin, photo www.hollywoodreporter.com

The designs for the residence were inspired by the iconic early 20th century houses of Long Island’s North Shore such as Beacon Towers for Gatsby’s home and Old Westbury Gardens for the Buchanans’ estate.

“Looking at images of Beacon Towers, there’s something that gives it the feel of the Disneyland castle, and Baz referenced that: the idea that Gatsby was building a fantasy,” Martin says.

For the exterior shots of Gatsby’s estate, the Gothic Revival building of the former St. Patrick’s Seminary in Sydney was used, with faux ivy applied to the first two floors and a temporary fountain constructed in the courtyard.

But the hottest creation is Gatsby’s Ballroom, the perfect place of his legendary parties. In relation with the turn-of-the-century mansions, the interior features a gold-filigreed ceiling with ornate crystal chandeliers, a marquetry floor (with Gatsby’s monogram inlaid at the center), towering columns between the windows, and a serpentine staircase.

Gatsby’s opulent Ballroom – photo www.architecturaldigest.com

“We talked about somebody coming in with a lot of money and what changes he would make to certain rooms,” Martin says.

Though Gatsby’s bedroom has traditional arched windows, the decor is totally glamorous, down to the tiniest details: richly polished hardwoods, a harlequin-pattern wall covering of silk crisscrossed with ribbons of wood, and a gray and gold Art Deco–style rug designed by Martin.

Gatsby’s sleek bedroom – photo www.architecturaldigest.com

In perfectly contrast to the opulent splendor of the Gatsby’s mansion stands Nick’s residence imagined as a homey cottage. Outside: a porch with an rustic “Adirondack” swing overlooks flower beds and a small lawn; inside: “Stickley” furniture, oak beams and moss-green tiles that call for an Arts and Crafts vibe.

Nick Carraway’s charming cottage –
“It was all about finding what we thought were quintessential Long Island motifs,” explains Martin. And materials that reflect Nick’s innocent nature.
photo www.architecturaldigest.com

photo www.architecturaldigest.com

Furthermore there is the Georgian redbrick castle where Daisy – Nick’s cousin and Gatsby’s obsession – lives with her unfaithful husband, Tom. Based in part on Old Westbury Gardens architecture on Long Island, New York, the manor (whose exterior was built on a sound-stage, with enhancements added digitally) immediately bring authority status. The luxurious Hollywood Regency and Deco-inflected furnishings in the sitting room, the contemporary art, and the formal gardens are all intended, Martin says, “to contrast Daisy with the new-money fantasist that is Gatsby.”

The grounds of Daisy and Tom Buchanan’s redbrick manor, partly inspired by
Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island – photo www.architecturaldigest.com

The Buchanans’ sitting room features a vibrant mix of styles, from European Deco to Hollywood Regency, evoking a
fashionable luxury – photo www.architecturaldigest.com

So, immerse yourself in the spectacular world of the 1920s – an affluent America throughout the decade defined by the Art Deco style: geometric shapes, streamlining and clean lines – and inspire your space by true Gatsby style, with elements of opulence and polished furniture, silky fabrics and luxurious crystal lighting, just because the interior designers go for the Great Gatsby look this spring!

Very known among art collectors, the two, apart from exploiting the inspiration that Brazil offers them each time when they create design pieces, they aim to be original and to surpass the barrier between design and art.

Campana Brothers for Baccarat, Milano Design Week 2013
photo nytimes.com

“Brazil has a multitude of materials and natural fibers that haven’t yet been exploited and that we want to combine with the European elegance.” And this is how the project between them and Baccarat the French company specialized in the production of crystal objects is born. “This collaboration was born from the idea of mixing the nature, its cyclicity and the refinement of the Baccarat manufacturer” explains Humberto.

<img class=" wp-image-1281 " alt="Campana Brothers for Baccarat. Milano Design Week 2013
photo www.hkhomejournal.com

And referring to the process of creating the lamps, the two explain how spectacular each stage of the process was:

“There are almost 120 bamboo species. In our town, Brotas, two hours from San Paulo, there is a great tradition in cultivating bamboo. There is an entire show where the bamboo is spread in the sun so it would dry, it’s unique. Then, the bamboo is fold with the help of fire, steam and sand so that it wouldn’t breake.”

Fabio Novembre is a free and explosive player on the scene of international architecture and design, since he does not belong to any group or trend. He is an Italian architect with an international visibility who worked in the last years on a very personal, original and recognizable way of expression, thus seducing the audience and the critics.

http://img.archiexpo.com
Structure made of flexible polypropylene rope legs and fixed legs.

Through his interior design projects made in the last 20 years, Novembre entered the international scene not by following the minimalist trend that took the scene for years, nor by any other popular trend, but due to a very clear, strong and self-aware architecture.

http://www.novembre.it

Always interested in contemporary issues, we discover Novembre in a new project that opened to the public not long ago, on the 8th of April in Milano, on Corso Venezia 8. With a project that unravels the artist’s idea on the relationship between fashion and design, the new boutique Who’s Who is strong both on the level regarding fashion, as well as design.

http://www.novembre.it

Therefore, with an extremely expressive concept projected in the future, Who’s Who becomes the ideal scene where a man and a woman would meet. They are represented by large body shapes, made out of glass appearing to slowly move while their hands are trying to find each other, reminding of Michelangelo.

It’s a surrealist scenario where the walls made out of forged steel (looking like a mirror) reflect a reality multiplied and very fluid so that the human characters that meet at the entrance in the shop multiply, are absorbed and even dissolved in space. This is November’s interpretation on the concept of Who’s Who, an original interpretation on the search of an identity. Each of us can find oneself only due to love and creation.

www.dezeen.com
Made for Italian brand Gufram and presented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2013.

“When people ask me why I wear a skull on my finger, I always answer that it belonged to my grand-father, who was a pirate, and I think I came to believe it myself,” says Novembre. “Everybody should have at least one pirate grand-father in their family tree: it would represent a strong branch to cling to.” (quote from dazeen.com)
