ELMGREEN & DRAGSET AT Astrup Fearnley Museum

‘Biography’ presents a wide selection of works from Elmgreen & Dragset’s complex universe, including sculpture, performance and interactive installations. Works from the late 1990s onwards will be shown together with recent projects, and all together they will create a unique insight into the artists’ oeuvre. Elmgreen & Dragset consider an exhibition to be a work of art in itself, with all its narrative, choreographic and social possibilities and ‘Biography’ will examine the very conditions of exhibiting.

Works that initially arrived from very different contexts are here brought together and the new constellations of works generate altered readings and additional layers of meaning. When walking through the museum, one will experience environments which occur very realistic, just in order to end up in almost surreal and other worldly scenarios elsewhere in the exhibition. A durational live act is juxtaposed with a series of wall pieces, and existing sculptures find their place in the context of new site specific environments. Part of the museum’s main exhibition hall is transformed into a gay nightclub, where the public encounter the remnants of a party, witnessing an activity going on prior to the opening of the exhibition. Additionally, areas of the museum that are not normally used as exhibition spaces are included in Elmgreen & Dragset’s staging. TAKASHI MURAKAMI : JELLYFISH EYES

Takashi Murakami’s feature-film debut is a loving homage to Japanese popular culture. When a young boy moves with his widowed mother to the Japanese countryside, he discovers that their apartment is inhabited by a strange creature—and that very little is what it appears to be in the sleepy town.

Then, Pharrell Williams remixed this song for his friend Takashi Murakami 村上隆’s new video Jellyfish Eyes:

NUCLEO STUDIO AT NILUFAR GALLERY IN MILAN

The exhibition was conceived and realised by the Nilufar Gallery of Milan, and curated by Elena Giulia Abbiatici and Melania Rossi. It was set up under the “Promises of Art” program, which aims to promote young talents from the ultra-contemporary Italian art scene. Manifesto tells the story of a group and its assertions. This is not propaganda. It’s a second reading, a proposition.

It is a thought which translates into action, a meeting at the peak of artisanal and artistic research. The collective meaning of Manifesto is completed by presenting a series of everyday objects – Manifesto, concludes by exploring the evolution and the research innate in visible products. The syntax of lexicon is thus made tangible, tied as it were to the process of invention and creation of objects. Each object discloses its internal secret as an original artistic vision.

The exhibition serves to enforce the creative process by making it explicit and to present the relationship between different materials, shapes, colours, weights and concept, as their balance changes and evolves. The result is a perfect link interlocking empty spaces and volumes, abstract principles and everyday use, potential allusion and the real essence of objects… NUCLEO’s work is simultaneously material and conceptual: molded by many hands, it has the ambition to combine three forms of knowledge – theory, practice and production (theoria, pràxis e poiesis). The 15 works on show in the Hôtel de Galliffet are of different formats, all realised with various techniques developed during the past five years.
