The library is located along the seashore of China Bohai Bay. The design key point is focused on exploring the co-existing relationship of the space boundary, the movement of human body, the shifting light ambience, the air ventilating through and the ocean view.

The design began with section. The library houses a reading area, a meditation space, activity room, a drinking bar and a resting area. According to each space, we establish distinctive relationship between space and the ocean; define how light and wind enters into each room.

From church to offices by CLS architetti

from the architects: The church of San Paolo Converso houses the new headquarters of CLS architetti. The “Firm in the Church” – a project created by the firm’s architects themselves and inaugurated at the end of 2014 – is a structure located inside the church. The church of San Paolo Converso, dating back to the 16th century and decorated with fresco paintings by the Campi brothers, is divided in a front church and a rear church. The front church is open to the public and consists of a single chamber with an entirely decorated barrel vault and side chapels, at the centre of which rises the altar.

The rear church is reserved to the cloistered nuns of the adjacent convent. These two sections communicate visually through the upper lunette on the wall behind the altar. The reception is located at the entrance of the front church, the library in the altar area, and a first meeting room in the area connecting the two churches. A four-floor iron structure built in the rear section houses the offices and the various planning areas. All this without affecting the original construction in any way. An iron staircase connects the floors crossing the entire length of the parallelepiped structure.

The last floor houses the partners’ offices and the meeting room, which protrudes over the front part through the lunette, thereby dominating the entire space with a unique view. The iron structure is open on all sides, thereby allowing you to admire the frescoes from different levels. The library, plastic model laboratory, and the kitchen are in the groin-vaulted crypt, which features a double row of four columns dating back to the 16th century. The entire project is made of natural black tubular iron, whose cross-section is repeated in different scales both in the construction of the weight-bearing structure and in the furnishes, such as the desks and bookcases designed for this space. The flooring and worktops are covered with grey rubber, thereby making the various areas visually homogeneous.

The lighting is the result of a light engineering study carried out together with Flos: tailor-made hand blown neon lights attached directly to the iron structure. A complex lighting system lights the frescoes and volumes from various sources. In addition, the particularity of the place has required an acoustics study to ensure proper soundproofing for the open spaces on all four floors. The partners of the firm have decided to make the front church a place dedicated to creative disciplines, where international guests can organise their exhibitions, performances, and installations open to the public.

Hotel Hotel by March Studio

”March studio have designed the stair and lobby for Canberra’s Hotel Hotel, so nice they named it twice! The dynamic space marking the entry to the hotel. The grand gesture is composed of reclaimed timber, blurring boundaries while directing views and movement. March Studio was engaged to create spaces which encouraged residents, guests and visitors to linger in what can often be a transient space. Australia’s March Studio is responsible for some of the most interesting and innovative interiors at the moment.

In the stair the timber is heavy, grounded, a stacked agglomeration. Freed to scatter up the walls and across the ceiling, the suspended timber filters exterior light and views into and from internal spaces. Spidery, pixellated shadows are cast on the floor and bare walls. The stair linking the hotel and apartment buildings.

In this 68-room, 28-apartment hotel, no two rooms are alike. 50 makers, artists and creative studios developed the design of Hotel Hotel.

Brothers Johnathan and Nectar Efkarpidis are the founders of Hotel Hotel, located in NewActon, a diverse new precinct in Canberra, Nishi Commercial is a major new mixed development building housing government departments, private offices, a cinema and cafes.

The walls in the hotel lobby – and the seating, the benches, the counters – are an attempt to bring the handmade into the rigorous, polished building around it. Materials – custom gluelam timber, precast concrete beams – are allowed to sit, unadorned, stacked in a simple manner, overlapping, their joints overrunning and poking out.

The singular system – the same for both materials – is stretched where needed, opened where useful, broken where forced. A large space is enveloped in this manner and then diffused, variegated by operations within these rules, to allow for spaces which have their own character.

Doors that are part opening, part display, continue this language in apparently weightless steel. This steel is picked up to lighten the bar, where stacked concrete props up sleek steel, which weaves into and halts the flow of suspended timber bursting up the stairs from the commercial lobby. Above the seating in front of the bar, large holes have been punched into the concrete slab capping the space. These portholes allow glimpses into the courtyard above and natural light to enter the space.

The main entrance to Nishi Residential, opposite the linking stair, was also part of March Studio’s brief. Outside is a canopy which shrugs off its weight with flowing timber recalling the Commercial Lobby.

The entrance airlock is lined on two walls and ceiling with what could be steel punchcards for an ancient mainframe. Filling the gaps punched in these steel sandwich panels are amber marbles, thick glass which filters the light and warms the space. The directionality of the commercial lobby is mirrored here, in the lines of punched holes on wall and ceiling, which scatter across the rear wall and flow into the stacked timber of the Hotel Hotel library. ”

QUIRKY AND FUNCTIONAL: MISHA KAHN’S DESIGNS

With plastic excess becoming a bigger issue, artists and designers are upcycling the waste of man-made materials into works of art. Brooklyn-based, Minnesota-born designer and artist Misha Kahn creates furniture for the sake of designing accessible art with a function. In his use of unexpected textures and quirky combinations, Kahn’s work is definitely a conversation starter.

You can see below a few of her works from the past years, along with the recent “candy looking” bench. Any mix and match ideas for an interesting interiur design?

Rhode Island School of Design graduate Misha Kahn exhibited a bench representing a cut log but made of synthetic materials at Venture Lambrate last week. Expanding foam is embedded with plastic conduit, gold plastic gems, climbing rope, tinsel and other man-made flotsam and jetsam.

FINE TASTE FOR WINE AND DESIGN

The Graham’s Lodge has been open to visitors since 1993, It featured a tasting area where visitors could enjoy Port, and an adjoining shop and wine bar. On arrival at the lodge, visitors were given a guided tour of the working lodge, where 3,500 casks (or ‘pipes’, in Port language) of maturing Port are stored. The visit also included the cool, dark Vintage ‘bins’ (wine cellars) where older Graham’s Vintage Ports are kept (some Ports, such as the 1868 still lie there).

According to their website, Graham’s Port Lodge (Portugal) has some serious history and heritage behind those gigantic barrels of port—they have been in the wine business for over three centuries.In 2011, they underwent renovations aimed to modernize and create new ways for consumers to experience port. The result? A lodge that comes equipped with a restaurant, shop, wine bar, vintage room and a small-scale museum. The interiors are contemporary, industrial, and rustic at times, with white walls and wood paneling setting a warm ambience. BLURRED LINES WITH MARK MAKING-EXPERIMENTATION

Misha Hollenbach, co-creater of design house Perks & Mini, is showcasing his artistic ingenuity with the “A.T.G.S.” exhibition. Featuring a series of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and collages, the exhibit will push the boundaries of conventional art and blurs the lines of an object with mark-making experimentation. Taking inspiration from the iconic art period of Dadaism and pushing further into the realm of “base materialism,” the “A.T.G.S.” showcase will be open to the public as of Wednesday, August 28 and will run through September 14.

THE HOUSE AND THE DESIGNER: MALENE BIRGER

Danish brand, By Malene Birger is a fashion magpie’s dream. Launched in 2003, this season sees the release of the eponymous designer’s highly-anticipated 10-year anniversary collection, offering a signature mix of Scandi-cool styling with 50s and 60s references. Bold, bright and effortlessly chic, look for shimmering dresses, luxe knitwear and cool accessories.

Well, when it comes to her clothing line, Malene Birger is known for her elegant craftsmanship and simple silhouettes, while her flagship Copenhagen boutique has been applauded for its concept and design. So it comes as no surprise that this Danish designer’s home is nothing short of magnificent. The renovated two story farmhouse sits comfortably in the valley of S’Arracó, in south-west Mallorca. Malene renovated in 2011 and imparted her particularly sophisticated touch on the home. Similar to her fashion designs, her home features feminine, classic elements, united with sharp and modern features. The refined black and white motifs blend effortlessly with the homey touches, eclectic accessories and earthy materials. Though we’re not sure how anyone could give up the lavender lined walkway leading to the salt water pool and outdoor terraces, the cozy home is actually up for sale.

THE HOUSE WITH GIRAFFES AND ELEPHANTS IN THE BACKYARD

Between the painting covered walls, a mix of ephemera through out the house, and a distinctly bohemian vibe, this Byron Bay home of David and Yuge Bromley has plenty of eclectic charm. The Design Files – Australia’s most popular design blog, got an intimate tour of this residence, which artist David co-designed with his wife Yuge upon relocating from Melbourne. David reworked the property to feature both a living and working space, with included acquiring the next door property to be a studio and office space. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, perhaps the most charming addition is the re-purposing of an adjoining building into an outdoor guest room. Outdoor bathtub = pure heaven.

Though it’s clearly a seriously impressive and kind of mind-bloggling space, the charm of this home really rests on its sense of light-heartedness and sponteneity. It’s clear that this house has come together very intuitively, rather than adhering to a grand master plan. This is evident everywhere you look – in the wide stripes painted freehand on the kitchen walls, and the ad hoc placement of artwork from floor to ceiling, wherever it will fit, underneath windows and above doorways. Yuge and David see furniture and objects as very much part of the architecture of a home – ‘placing bits and pieces we love around the house is how we build a space’ says Yuge. Despite it’s devilish good looks, there’s nothing precious about this home – like so many of David’s creative endeavours, the space is ever-changing.
