The surf craze that was born earlier this summer from the impending Sharknado has now washed over Alexander Wang’s SoHo flagship. A new installation in the shop’s Cage gallery space features five marble-printed surfboards suspended over an array of Wang’s latest accessories. A massive black sand sculpture of a cresting wave squats at the center of the space, drawing together the aesthetics of both Wang’s minimalist designs and the monolithic structures championed by modernism. The patterns on the five hanging boards were screen-printed from photographs of unusual marble slabs selected by Wang and Hayden Cox, founder of Australian surf brand Haydenshapes. Cox then crafted the boards by hand. But the exhibit isn’t just about form. It’s also utilitarian: The boards are an award-winning Hypto Krypto model honored by the Australian Surf and Board Sports Industry Association. The surfboard installation continues in the vein of the abstract forms that have previously inhabited the space. Past Cage exhibits have included an array of 21 televisions that flash images of static and the occasional “Parental Advisory” warning, and a black shrink-wrapped display composed of a skeleton of storage vessels and dress forms.

The art of inserting a new building into an historic city block means engaging in an open, physical dialogue with the existing city buildings. Building onto a structure also presents an opportunity for a wideranging renovation project, a reclaiming of space. The new headquarters of the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé is an unexpected presence, a curved volume glimpsed floating in the middle of a courtyard, anchored on just a few supports. It is complimented by a group of birch trees, a floral island set in the dense mineral context of the city.

St Paul’s Cathedral hosts Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), the first of two large-scale permanent video installations created by internationally acclaimed artist Bill Viola.

The installation is the first moving-image artwork to be installed in a British cathedral or church on a long-term basis.

Created by Bill Viola and Kira Perov and opened in May 2014, Martyrs shows four individuals, across four colour vertical plasma screens, being martyred by the four classical elements.

As the work opens, four individuals are shown in stasis, a pause from their suffering. Gradually there is movement in each scene as an element of nature begins to disturb their stillness. Flames rain down, winds begin to lash, water cascades, and earth flies up. As the elements rage, each martyr’s resolve remains unchanged. In their most violent assault, the elements represent the darkest hour of the martyr’s passage through death into the light.
The work has no sound. It lasts for seven minutes.

photo stpauls.co.uk

Martyrs will be joined in 2015 by a second piece entitled Mary, which the artist has conceived as a companion work. The installations have been gifted to Tate, and are on long-term loan to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Gheorghe Ilea
The Relocation Story
Opening: May 29, 19 – 21 h
Galeria Plan B Cluj
May 29 – June 29 2014
Monday – Friday, 16 – 20 h
The Paintbrush Factory
Henri Barbusse 59 – 61
400616 Cluj, Romania
Galeria Plan B Cluj is happy to invite you to the opening of the personal exhibition The Relocation Story by Gheorghe Ilea, on Thursday, 29 May at 7 pm.
The first stage of the project The Relocation Story was presented in November 2012; the artist displayed the painting Ciucea-Galpaia on the facade of The Paintbrush Factory in Cluj for five months, thus testing its resistance and at the same time its fragility in relation to the exhibiting space – different from the protective environment of the studio – and to the thermal changes. In keeping with the proportion of the partly deteriorated original painting adorning the interior of the wooden church in Ciucea, made by Ioan Pop din Romanasi more than two hundred years ago, the work is a copy thereof and depicts the way in which time has left its marks on it.
The second stage of the exhibition, The Relocation Story, further develops the theme of the project and reconstructs from fragments of images and texts the artist’s long lasting relationship with the history of this church; the central piece of this show, The Paper Church, is a large scale frottage that transposes directly the imprint of the church exterior on a sixty-five meters square paper sheet.

Exhibition view
photo plan-b.ro

”I am now trying to figure out on paper the theme of these exhibitions. The outline seems to be quite permissive, although unclear in some places; I am lingering while trying to draw the contact paths between apparently two different areas. The keywords are: surface, text, drawing, writing, cloth, weaving, paper, paint, canvas, relocation. I have been interested in each and every term mentioned above for a long time now and the exhibitions are a great opportunity to bring them together in dialogue. What connection could it be between these keywords and the objects, the artworks included in these exhibitions? I’m struggling to understand the meaning of surface, coat, text, relocation, not by their dictionary definitions, but rather by the link between their material essence and their spiritual quality. [...] Everybody knows something about drawing and paper. What exactly could we possibly search beyond the surface of a draw on paper? Perhaps the search should be done on the other side of the surface – within us. But what is a surface? What kind of unit do we use to measure it? Is it millimeter, micron, quanta? There are drawings and paintings – especially paintings – that cancel the surface and take your eyes and mind beyond themselves. The realistic and surreal ones have this kind of power. The drawings and paintings of children and those created at the very beginning of civilization get straight to your mind, without any mediators. But our eyes are not clean enough and we see these artworks through all the clusters of art history. [...]The relocation is the last element left on my list. Nobody can evade the final «relocation». I am talking about death, of course. My grandfather used to call it «the only justice in this world». Perhaps he was telling the truth, although using a radical terminology. But until then, we are bound to live with small relocations. Galpaia old church was no longer useful to its village – a new one was built and the old one might have been destroyed, as it happened to many other churches in the country, if it wouldn’t had been moved to Ciucea.”

Eröffnung & Buchpräsentation: 09. Oktober 2014 – 18-21 Uhr

Ausstellung: 10. Oktober – 15. November 2014

Who hasn’t had the desire just to become someone else for a while? Dressing up is a way of creating an alter ego and a second skin which one’s behaviour can be adjusted to. Regardless of the motivating factors which cause somebody to acquire a costume, the main principle remains the same: the civilian steps behind the mask and turns into somebody else. For this photo series I visited owners of elaborate costumes in their own homes. As a matter of fact, ‘just the two of us’ deals with both: the costumes and the people behind them.

When Emmanuel Perrotin met Pharrell Williams in Miami during 2007 and asked him to come up with his very first design object, he never imagined that this musical genius, super-producer and fashion designer would carry the adventure with a sculpture created with Takashi Murakami1. To mark the release of the album G I R L, Pharrell Williams and Emmanuel Perrotin continue their artistic collaboration seven years later with an exhibition curated especially for Galerie Perrotin in Paris.

Photo Mathieu Vilasco

“G I R L” is a contemporary art exhibition, which brings together 48 artworks – including 12 specially produced works. The exhibition will be presented in Galerie Perrotin’s new space, the Salle de Bal, a former ballroom at the Hôtel du Grand Veneur, a 17th century Hôtel Particulier in the Marais area of Paris. This selection of artists close to the gallery and the musician form a kind of operatic opus, where muses have come together to pay tribute to femininity through the vision of 37 artists / including 18 women.
The 48 artworks presented in this exhibition, coordinated by Ashok Adicéam, Senior Advisor at Galerie Perrotin, aim to celebratewomen who are above all free, liberated by artists and their boundless, unfettered imagination!

Atelier Van Lieshout, Andrea Branzi, Humberto & Fernando Campana, Wendell Castle, Ingrid Donat, Vincent Dubourg, Lonneke Gordijn & Ralph Nauta, Joris Laarman, Frederik Molenschot, Marc Quinn, Rick Owens, Charles Trevelyan.

Entitled Organic, this new exhibition presents artworks of 12 designers, all characterized by their inventiveness, as well as their vast range of colours and materials employed here.

Campana Brothers
photo communicart.fr

Inspired or created from vegetable, animal or organic shapes and textures, these works intend to highlight nature’s aesthetic dimension, as can be seen from the Campana Brothers’ Pirarucu’s skin (giant Amazonian fish) buffet. The artists have imagined functional sculptures whose shapes refer to the complexity of the organic reality, thus inventing a new vocabulary through their reinterpretation of nature’s elements.

Teresita Fernández: As Above So Below

On view beginning May 24, 2014

Demonstrating the artist’s remarkable ability to transform materials and their surrounding architecture into an enveloping perceptual experience, Teresita Fernández: As Above So Below combines graphite and gold to create a series of immersive, interconnected installations whose scale shifts from intimate to vast, from miniature to panoramic. Fernández’s largest solo exhibition to date, As Above So Below is made up entirely of new works.

Describing a universe in balance, the phrase “as above, so below” originates from the ancient Hermetic tradition central to alchemy, in which every action occurring on one level of reality (physical, emotional, or mental) correlates to every other. Responding to MASS MoCA’s massive and light-filled first-floor galleries, Fernández’s trio of new landscape-informed, large-scale installations embodies this expression, and is united through the show’s elaborately detailed exploration of two essential minerals.

In MASS MoCA’s triple-height gallery, occupying more than half of the 128’ x 29’ space, an installation titled Black Sun, 2014, evokes an amplified, glowing, cloud cover when viewed from underneath. When observed from overlooking mezzanine balconies, the same elements become vast topographical landscapes. Slowly gradating in color from amber to solid black, and composed of thousands of translucent tubes suspended from the ceiling, Black Suncreates a series of overlapping atmospheric planes; the entire work changes in an instant with the shifting natural light, and at times appears a slowly moving cinematic dissolve.

Aujourd’hui, le monde est mort (Lost Human Genetic Archive)

HIROSHI SUGIMOTO
25/04/2014 – 07/09/2014

Via a body of work in which technical virtuosity is backed by a sound conceptual framework, Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948, lives and works between New York and Tokyo) explores the nature of time and perception, and the origins of consciousness. Among his most famous photographic series, mention may be made of Dioramas (1976-), taken in natural history museums, these photographs depict stuffed animals displayed in artificial habitats, Theaters (1978-), photographed by exposing the photographic film throughout the entire projection of a film, and Seascapes (1980-), which capture the essence of marine landscapes throughout the world, retaining only their crucial elements, air and water.

167 Olympic Rain Forest, 2012
photo offi.fr

“Aujourd’hui le monde est mort [Lost Human Genetic Archive]” is a new facet of a series of exhibitions Hiroshi Sugimoto has been elaborating for about ten years, juxtaposing his collections of objects, coming from a range of periods and cultures, and his photographic works. The objects in his collection are his “doubles,” and are indispensable to the artist as sources of lessons that enable him to renew his art. Drawing on references to Albert Camus’s novel L’Étranger [The Stranger] and Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, the artist has staged a world after human beings have ceased to exist: a personal vision of history, seen from the future. The exhibition consists of around thirty scenarios, narrated by different fictitious characters: a bee-keeper, a specialist in comparative religion, and a politician, who choose to preserve (or not to preserve) their individual genetic information for the future.

Lightning Fields
photo artandsciencejournal.com

Devised as a kind of ruin, resonating with the atypical architecture of the Palais de Tokyo, the exhibition is not only the largest the artist has ever staged in Europe, but also a unique project that bears witness to his wide field of activity, ranging from literature to architecture. It is in the image of his attempt to understand art and human history according to a vast time scale that goes well beyond that of the human species, at the same time including science, religion, economics, etc.

Object created for Le Bourgeois gentilhomme de Molière à la Comédie-Française, 1988
photo offi.fr

Where is this human race heading, incapable of preventing itself from being destroyed in the name of unchecked growth? Guided by this question, Hiroshi Sugimoto lets his imagination and his creativity drift to meet up with both the past and the future.
