“Matthew Barney: RIVER OF FUNDAMENT is Barney’s first major solo museum exhibition in Los Angeles. River of Fundament (2014) is one of Barney’s most challenging and ambitious projects to date, and his largest filmic undertaking since the renowned, five-part CREMASTER film cycle (1994-2002). The film, written by Barney in collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler, tells a story of regeneration and rebirth inspired by Ancient Evenings (1983), Norman Mailer’s sprawling, provocative novel set in ancient Egypt. The presentation at MOCA comprises the epic length, operatic film and approximately 85 works inspired by or made in conjunction with the film, including large-scale sculptures weighing up to 25 tons, drawings, and storyboards. The exhibition also includes Barney’s Water Castings, a new group of sculptures on view for the first time. Overall, the works in the exhibition intertwine history and mythology with the contemplation of fundamental human drives—such as sex, violence, and power—that have continuously propelled civilizations.

Matthew Barney: RIVER OF FUNDAMENT is organized by Haus der Kunst, Munich in collaboration with the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Tasmania and curated by Okwui Enwezor. The Los Angeles presentation is coordinated by MOCA Assistant Curator Lanka Tattersall. The exhibition was realized by MOCA in collaboration with Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager, Basel.

Fabian Bürgy is a swiss based Sculptor and Digital Creative. His diverse and playful artistic practice, which includes sculpture, installation and digital imaging, explores the conceptual aesthetic of things through random encounters of materials, misplaced situations and spatial relationships.

He began his career as a sculptor and later moved into graphic design and new media, with the aim to combine the techniques of both worlds. Thus the projects often mix traditional craft with new technology, in combination with the conceptual rigor and sense of playfulness from the communication and design industry.

Bürgy creates conceptual situations and small interventions which are inspired by a wide range of mundane objects and appearances, from chairs and suicide belts to skid row textures, nails and even dog tails, all subjected to what could be described as Bürgy’s characteristically slightly violent and disturbing process of transformation, misplacement and dysfunction of things. He takes specific thoughts and develops conflicts with precise and absolutely minimalistic means – an oeuvre, which explores the point where known things become something else, where metamorphosis is reached.

In a humble and silent career spanning more than 15 years, he has sought to challenge the boundaries between real and unreal, aesthetics and symbolism. In recent years he has increasingly taken his practice beyond the actual physical creation and works with digital imaging to conceive his ideas.

In his sixth solo show at Anton Kern Gallery, British artist David Shrigley presents 78 drawings, two sculptures and one animation. The drawings, ink and acrylic on paper in two distinct sizes, depict a variety of situations involving humans, animals, parts of their bodies and other stuff. The sculptures are of two oversized objects, a subtractor (a calculator with limited function keys), and a working telephone that is hooked up to the gallery’s main phone line. The animation in the back gallery is a drawn and slightly altered version of the Sega arcade game, Out Run.

Like a great skeptical underground project, Shrigley’s conceptual, idea-based art is a never-ending stream of curious propositions and eccentric moral dilemmas. With acerbic humor and strangely profound insights, the artist lays bare the ambiguities, comedy and pathos of everyday life. According to the artist, most aspects of life have the potential to be “ridiculous, absurd, awkward, funny and meaningless all at once.”

Shrigley has consistently experimented with different media and formats, although drawing has been the mainstay of his practice. This exhibition focuses on the economy and eloquence of his unique, funny drawings on paper, with their pared-down, crude graphic forms and puttering script. In all these works, the artist furthers his exploratory unraveling of the world around him with images and words that beckon the viewer to enjoy the liberating power of a good laugh.

”March studio have designed the stair and lobby for Canberra’s Hotel Hotel, so nice they named it twice! The dynamic space marking the entry to the hotel. The grand gesture is composed of reclaimed timber, blurring boundaries while directing views and movement. March Studio was engaged to create spaces which encouraged residents, guests and visitors to linger in what can often be a transient space. Australia’s March Studio is responsible for some of the most interesting and innovative interiors at the moment.

There are so many amazing images of the interior today that it was hard to choose, so they are all in the gallery. Enjoy!

Above the seating in front of the bar, large holes have been punched into the concrete slab capping the space. These portholes allow glimpses into the courtyard above and natural light to enter the space.

A 124 page hardback book, ‘In Dogs We Trust’ reveals the special relationship between dogs and their owners. Photographers and friends from childhood Ollie Grove and Will Robson-Scott spent years searching across the social spectrum to shoot intriguing characters and their beloved hounds in locations as diverse as Hackney, Hampstead, Venice Beach, , Brooklyn and Queens.

Fashion and portrait photographer Ollie Grove shoots international campaigns for the likes of Bulmers; album covers for platinum selling artists such as Rudimental, and regularly produces works for high profile brands and music artists. He has a slight obsession with dogs.

Photographer and filmmaker Will Robson-Scott splits his time between London and New York an has achieved notoriety with a series of books and films documenting the global underworld of illegal graffiti writers.

“We are like a sifter,” said Bong Guerrero, the founder and CEO of Fashion Forward, a Dubai fashion week showcasing regional talent. “Filtering out the best designers and giving them a place to present their work. I see this as a new fashion ecosystem and we all have roles to play,” added the fashion entrepreneur.

Guerrero has come up with a smart strategy for his fledging fashion platform that is only in its fourth season. Over the three day event earlier this month, he broke up half a dozen fashion shows each day with keynote speeches from industry leaders and panel discussions on hot-button topics like “Modest Fashion in Modern Times” and “State of the Industry.” Full disclosure: I was one of the speakers at the event. Guerrero also created a venue for accessories, jewelry and niche designer labels to set up stands to promote their startup brands.

photo jeanlouissabaji.com

Fashion Forward is doing something that other nascent fashion weeks should take note of. Through the blending of shows, speeches and panels, the organization is not diluting its platform by presenting a plethora of designers in a catwalk setting before they have the maturity to take on such a high profile environment. Rather, this mélange of fashion-focused events was concentrated on industry education, facilitating the discovery by international buyers and journalists of local designer diamonds in the rough. While at the same time teaching those same budding talents about the issues and needs of the global market.

photo jeanlouissabaji.com

“When we launched it, we were very careful not to call it a fashion week,” said Ramzi Nakad, a partner and the COO of Fashion Forward. “With the name comes expectations and we wanted to be realistic about the state of the industry and where it is at.”

Currently there is about a 70% turnover each season of new designers showing at Fashion Forward, as so many of the brands are still quite small. But there are key indicators that the grass roots industry is starting to truly burrow in deep and take hold below the sands of Dubai.

Retreat into existence

December and January being the darkest months of the Finnish winter, S.A.E offers an extreme retreat into existence through art, silence and nature. The program brings together creative minds who are interested and working around the theme on various fields.
The predefined structure of the program is kept empty and more extreme elements can be added to it if the residents decide to want so (e.g limited internet access to limit the escapism through web, silent(no speaking) days). Conditions are excellent for both collaborating and for concentrating on your own work, thinking and being. There is also no pressure to necessarily produce anything, in case you are more into inner development.

Northern experience

The northern winter is an experience like no other. The sun stays lower on the horizon, leaving the days short with long blue moments and dark nights. Snow is likely to cover the grounds, and the landscape is very monotone. If you get lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of the Northern lights. The raw & rural surroundings create an ideal setting for personal inner journeys and research.

The residency program includes:

For working :

artist & project pages in Arteles Catalogue publication

part-time assistant to help you with your projects & practicalities

tools & equipment 24 h access

For everyday life:

24 h access to residency car getting around the region

pick-up service for arrivals and departures read more

Wi-Fi connection in all spaces (NOTE: The access to internet might be limited to e.g. one day a week only in order to deepen the awareness experience and to prevent the escapism into the wonders of www – The decision will be made collectively with all the residents, in the beginning of the residency.)

laundry facilities

Pure nature and silence

Program fees

All the selected residents are offered financial support by Arteles.
The current support is 50 % of the residency fee.

Residency fees including support:
970 €/ month for 1 person: single room + studio space
1480 €/ day for 2 persons: double room + studio spaces (larger groups: 25 €/ day / person)
(periods: 1 or 2 months)

The fees include the registration fee (120 €/ month/ person)

Have you a particular interest in drawing or notation for itself or as it may relate to another representational medium ?

Are you a fine artist, an applied artist, a musician or a writer who requires one to three months in an environment conducive to serious research and experimentation ?

DRAWinternational caters for creative people in pursuit of new and dynamic form, in preparation for exhibition, publication or postgraduate qualification.

John and Grete McNorton have established DRAWinternational as a centre of research for postgraduate art and design education and professional practice at their home and studios based at Art House Caylus, rue du chateau, 82160 Caylus, France.

John was Head of Centre for Art and Design Education and taught theoretical and two-dimensional studies on MA courses in Education, Ceramics and Fine Art at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, He also taught at the Royal College of Art, London and now runs the centre in France while continuing to visit other universities and institutions in the UK and Europe.
His PhD at the Royal College of Art was entitled: ‘Choreography of Drawing- the consciousness of the body in the space of a drawing’, (2003). He continues to explore these ideas through personal work and structured courses designed to enhance theoretical and practical skills in creative drawing action.

Grete has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (sculpture) and is a qualified art and design teacher. She has worked as an artist, teacher and administrator in both France and the UK. Grete set up and ran a contemporary gallery /studio in Cornwall, promoting exhibitions, art and craft workshops and life drawing. She worked as an artist/sculptor in Paris for six years and then returned to the UK to teach art and design in South Wales. Grete is currently professeur d’arts plastiques at the municipal drawing and painting school in Montauban, Tarn et Garonne.
Her sculptures represent visual and perceptual traces of memory that are established or reaffirmed during the process of making, serving as renewable and re-locatable entities in their own right, encompassing drawing, mono-print and painting.

His main interest is in creating platforms for public participation, by perverting technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance or telematic networks.

The exhibition, the second of the artist in the Gallery, consists of three installations that have in common the materialization of randomness. Meaning that, all his works are somehow modified by the spectator, reacting on his presence and movements. Lozano-Hemmer uses strategies of creation and criticism such as ambiguity, irony, repetition, and performance, with the aim of creating experiences of connection and complicity.
