St Paul’s Cathedral hosts Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), the first of two large-scale permanent video installations created by internationally acclaimed artist Bill Viola.

The installation is the first moving-image artwork to be installed in a British cathedral or church on a long-term basis.

Created by Bill Viola and Kira Perov and opened in May 2014, Martyrs shows four individuals, across four colour vertical plasma screens, being martyred by the four classical elements.

As the work opens, four individuals are shown in stasis, a pause from their suffering. Gradually there is movement in each scene as an element of nature begins to disturb their stillness. Flames rain down, winds begin to lash, water cascades, and earth flies up. As the elements rage, each martyr’s resolve remains unchanged. In their most violent assault, the elements represent the darkest hour of the martyr’s passage through death into the light.
The work has no sound. It lasts for seven minutes.

photo stpauls.co.uk

Martyrs will be joined in 2015 by a second piece entitled Mary, which the artist has conceived as a companion work. The installations have been gifted to Tate, and are on long-term loan to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Entitled Organic, this new exhibition presents artworks of 12 designers, all characterized by their inventiveness, as well as their vast range of colours and materials employed here.

Campana Brothers
photo communicart.fr

photo core77.com

Inspired or created from vegetable, animal or organic shapes and textures, these works intend to highlight nature’s aesthetic dimension, as can be seen from the Campana Brothers’ Pirarucu’s skin (giant Amazonian fish) buffet. The artists have imagined functional sculptures whose shapes refer to the complexity of the organic reality, thus inventing a new vocabulary through their reinterpretation of nature’s elements.

Victoria Miro is delighted to present a new body of sculptures and paintings by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama dedicated to her iconic depiction of pumpkins.

photo victoria-miro.com

The exhibition, which opened on 16 September 2014 comprises two elements: the main gallery houses a new body of paintings and large scale mosaic pumpkins which will be on show until 4 October; whilst a major new series of bronze sculptures will be on display in the gallery’s unique water garden until 20 December. The bronze pumpkins have been two years in the making and mark the first time the artist has worked with bronze on such a large scale.

photo victoria-miro.com

Since her earliest formative years, in a family who made their living cultivating plant seeds, Kusama has been fascinated by the natural world. She has always had an affinity with nature, particularly vegetal and floral life, but the pumpkin continues to occupy a special place in her iconography and is a motif she has returned to repeatedly throughout her career.
