Artist, orchestrator, filmmaker, curator and cultural archivist – it was no surprise that the Turner-prize winning artist Jeremy Deller would soon be asked to represent the British Pavilion at Venice’s prestigious contemporary art exhibition.

For the first time ever, the UK public will have the chance to see the British Council-commissioned exhibition on home soil through a national tour with stops planned in Bristol, Walthamstow and Margate. The tour, initiated and supported by the Art Fund will be specially adapted for each venue.

English Magic reflects the roots of much of Deller’s work, focusing on British society – its people, icons, myths, folklore and its cultural and political history. The exhibition weaves controversial and thought-provoking themes challenging our ideas around the super-rich, war, animal cruelty, the Royal Family and even Range Rovers get a mention, as Deller suggests, ‘There’s something to annoy everyone basically, my mum will be annoyed’.
