Encompassing all 3,000 square meters of GOMA’s ground floor is ‘falling back to earth’, a monumental, immersive exhibition by cai guo-qiang, encompassing both new and recent works reconfigured for the space. dramatic and explosive artistic explorations define the evolution of his ground-breaking practice, contemplating the complex relationship between humanity and nature through promising both spectacular and meditative installations.

The year’s most anticipated exhibition at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in South Brisbane, Australia is from a truly global artist whose dramatic installations and explosion events have made him one of the most innovative figures in contemporary art. Over the past 25 years, Cai Guo Qiang has held solo exhibitions at some of the world’s most prestigious art institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. Following recent exhibitions in Qatar, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro and Venice, QAGOMA is excited to present ‘Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth’ — the artist’s first solo exhibition in Australia and a GOMA exclusive.

The exhibition, Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth, will showcase Heritage and Eucalyptus, two pieces that were especially commissioned to headline the show, which runs until May.

Heritage 2013 is an installation of 99 replicas of animals, including pandas, tigers and kangaroos, drinking around a lake surrounded by white sand that Cai says is reminiscent of the islands that make up Brisbane’s Moreton bay. It will become part of the gallery’s permanent collection.

Eucalyptus (2013) is an enormous tree that was harvested at Springfield, in Brisbane’s west, from land that was due to be cleared by developers. The piece was inspired by visits New York-based Cai has made to the Lamington National Park in southeast Queensland.

The installation has been erected in GOMA’s central gallery and features chairs made of timber stumps where visitors can sit, ponder and even design ideas for what the tree should be used for once the exhibition ends.

Alongside the two new commissions will be one of Cai’s most recognised pieces, Head On (2006), the life-sized replica of 99 wolves diving into a glass wall and bouncing off it that is part of the famed global Deutsche Bank collection. It is the first time the piece has been shown in Australia.

The exhibition is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the fast-growing gallery during the next six months. One of Cai’s present overseas showings, Cai Guo-Qiang: Peasant Da Vincis in Rio de Janeiro, has attracted 300,000 visitors.
