“This barn of 1878, secluded 1760 meters above sea level, was used for housing during the pasture season. the animals were sheltered in the ground level.

Despite several negligible modifications over the years, this building kept its original character, distinctive and typica. the added annexes were dismantled to reveal its initial shape, slightly raised in order to gain height under the roof. the building is currently used as a holiday home ; due to its privileged position on the skiing area, it is well appreciated in winter.

The conversion project tries to emphasize the comfort of the barn while keeping its rudimentary character. the building stays simply set in the fields, without particular exterior layout. the main outer intervention is the opening of a large glass banner facing the valley, offering sunshine, light and the exceptional panorama on the alps.

The inner surfacing, soft and warm, made with larch siding panels, contrasts with the rough stone facades, made to resist to the tough alpine climate. a wood stove guarantees the heating of the main room.”

. Kefallinia. Cephalonia. The island was even described by Homer in ancient times. Its backbone culminates in a peak 1,628m high, in the midst of the Ionian Sea. Seen from the mainland, it surges out of the blue depths in an intense light, often coiffed with a veil of clouds. So when the opportunity arose to build a house facing this spectacle, the choice was obvious. The subject would of course be the island, framed by the house. From the initial sketches until its completion, the plans were developed around the view. From the terraces, the sitting room, the dining room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms, the living space was oriented towards this fascinating seascape, which the architecture emphasises, making it even more theatrical.

roccolo’s swimming pool

The client’s requirement was for a pavilion to be connected to the main historic house causing the least visual interference with the surrounding parkland. The pavilion was for an indoor pool, and some space for fitness, service and leasure in a climate controlled space.

The main house, an early 1900 liberty building had been renovated by the clients ten years previously. The main house ground floor sat 100 cm above the external ground and as such had little connection to the surrounding parkland.The client also desired a glass enclosed space attached to the main house to enjoy the view of its natural surroundings.
The previous renovation of the house included landscaping and the addition of a small artificial lake in the south corner of the parkland.

On this basis and after an accurate topographic survey the following principles were adopted to create minimal visual impact, place the pavilion volume underground.

Location informed by the natural topography of the parkland.
Use the different ground levels to capture light inside, not with zenithale light but with windows directly connected to the outside landscape and lake. Visually connect the underground pavilion to the artificial lake.

Locate the pavilion far away from the main house in a strategic position, to create a totally new and independent space reached by a path that emphasizes the sense of privacy. The location of the underground pavilion far away from the house would then create an interesting and dynamic relationship between the two spaces.

Connect the main house to the underground pavilion and pool via a tunnel.
An irregular path was determined by the established trees which were to be protected.
The tunnel also connects via a few steps to a second small glass enclosed conservatory totally open to the surrounding parkland. A glass enclosed narrow bridge connects the conservatory to the main house.
The specific design of the structural steel was placed outside the glass perimeter. This was to give depth and emphasis to the internal volume and at the same time make the window frame design secondary.Stone footings of the conservatory on the south side of the main house enabled changes in the surrounding garden level, to give a direct connection between the garden and the internal space.
The pavilion space containing the indoor pool, fitness area and small kitchen is based on a sequence of simple geometric volumes in either wood or cement to contain the various functions.

All technical requirements for ventilation, climate control, automated pool cover etc were designed to be as discrete as possible within the overall design.

Choice of material for the pool lining and surrounding pavement needed to be durable and, neutral in colour. It also needed to be able to cover steps, ledges and curved surfaces ( pavement, walls and pool lining). The aim was to achieve a sense of continuity within the volume inside and outside the pool. A small white ceramic mosaic tile was chosen.
The choice of continuity of material creates an effect: a mass of water finds its natural resting state and settles in the lowest part of the volume, held by a dynamic and at the same time gentle form before it slowly follows its course down to quietly settle in the pool.

The west side of the pavilion (front) houses a sliding door. The door totally disappears into a structural cavity to maximize the connection with the surrounding artificial lake and parkland. In summer the indoor and outdoor spaces become one, a seamless conversation between both water surfaces (pool and lake) …..
The surface level of the pool and lake are the same. A small patio/ solarium 40 cm lower than this creates an entrance. The lowered space, obscured from the view of the house mediates the relationship of the natural surroundings and the pavilions simple geometry.

From the architect. The Wirra Willa Pavilion is a Miesian inspired glass pavilion situated in a vibrant and fertile, rural landscape setting not dissimilar to that portrayed in a Claude Monet painting.

The aim was to create a multifunctional space that provided an experiential opportunityfor the visitor so they could appreciate, to the full extent, the inherent beauty of the landscape. The specific site is situated remotely on a private property that totals 80 acres and was originally established as a stone and citrus fruit orchard. There are well established gardens intertwined throughout.

The pavilion cantilevers over the natural spring fed dam to connect the inhabitant to a sublime environment that is pulsing with an abundance of life and natural beauty. It is essentially used as a private and remote spa house and guest retreat that compliments the existing residence on the property.

“25 Green” : a house among trees

A new house has put down its roots in Turin. Its structure is in steel and it looks like a forest where trees are rooted in terraces with irregular shapes, ponds are crossed by footings and lush gardens cover the roofs. The building has been thought as a living forest, a house on the trees like the houses children dream of and sometimes build.
The project comes from the necessity of making a residential building to complement a block featured by lack of homogeneity and heterogeneous prospects. The aim of the project is both the construction of the block perimeter with a continuous façade and the making of a filter between the internal inhabited space and the streets. The project wants to create a flowing and smooth transition space to soften the passage from the inside to the outside where the space is always enjoyable. The smooth and changeable transition is emphasized by a targeted use of the green and the building materials as to create a structure which is compact and distinct but also transparent, mutable and enjoyable.

It is a special building because it is alive: it grows, it breaths and it changes since 150 trees with tall trunks cover its terraces. Together with 50 trees planted in the court garden they produce oxygen, absorb carbonic anhydride, cut down air pollution, protect from noise, follow the natural cycle of Seasons, grow day after day and create a perfect microclimate inside the building so diminuishing the fall and rise in temperature in summertime and wintertime.

The streeps in solid wood that floor the terraces filter the sunlight in summer, while in winter they let the light break into the house. The wainscot in larch shingles is a sort of soft and vibrant surface. The metal structures look like trees and they “grow” from the groundfloor to the roof while holding up the wooden planking of the terraces: they become entwined with the vegetation to form a unique façade.

One of the aims of the project is the increase of the energetic efficiency and for this reason several integrated solutions have been adopted: continuous insulation, sun protection, heating and cooling systems which make use of the geothermal energy with heat pumps and recycling of the falling rain to water the green.
There are 63 residential units in the building and they are all different and fitted with wide terraces of irregular shapes that surround the trees. The last floor is covered with private green roofs.

The green is diversified: big vases on the terraces, court gardens, green walls and roof gardens just in front of the lofts.
In the vases there are trees or shrubs of different heights from 2.5 m. to 8 m. Deciduous species have been planted to have sun irradiation in wintertime too. The choice of the species , even if diversified according to the different needs, has been made to grant a variety of leaves, colours and flowering.
When all the green is fully blooming it gives the feeling of living in a tree house. You can dream of a house or live in a dream!

from the architects: The church of San Paolo Converso houses the new headquarters of CLS architetti. The “Firm in the Church” – a project created by the firm’s architects themselves and inaugurated at the end of 2014 – is a structure located inside the church. The church of San Paolo Converso, dating back to the 16th century and decorated with fresco paintings by the Campi brothers, is divided in a front church and a rear church. The front church is open to the public and consists of a single chamber with an entirely decorated barrel vault and side chapels, at the centre of which rises the altar.

The rear church is reserved to the cloistered nuns of the adjacent convent. These two sections communicate visually through the upper lunette on the wall behind the altar. The reception is located at the entrance of the front church, the library in the altar area, and a first meeting room in the area connecting the two churches. A four-floor iron structure built in the rear section houses the offices and the various planning areas. All this without affecting the original construction in any way. An iron staircase connects the floors crossing the entire length of the parallelepiped structure.

The last floor houses the partners’ offices and the meeting room, which protrudes over the front part through the lunette, thereby dominating the entire space with a unique view. The iron structure is open on all sides, thereby allowing you to admire the frescoes from different levels. The library, plastic model laboratory, and the kitchen are in the groin-vaulted crypt, which features a double row of four columns dating back to the 16th century. The entire project is made of natural black tubular iron, whose cross-section is repeated in different scales both in the construction of the weight-bearing structure and in the furnishes, such as the desks and bookcases designed for this space. The flooring and worktops are covered with grey rubber, thereby making the various areas visually homogeneous.

The lighting is the result of a light engineering study carried out together with Flos: tailor-made hand blown neon lights attached directly to the iron structure. A complex lighting system lights the frescoes and volumes from various sources. In addition, the particularity of the place has required an acoustics study to ensure proper soundproofing for the open spaces on all four floors. The partners of the firm have decided to make the front church a place dedicated to creative disciplines, where international guests can organise their exhibitions, performances, and installations open to the public.

Via the architect. The building is located in the Colonia Roma, a historic neighbourhood in the central sector of Mexico City. La Roma developed in the 19th century as one of the first extensions of the city centre, with an orthogonal grid of large houses inhabited by the upper classes of the city. With the emergence of suburban life in the 50s, la Roma decreased its population throughout the second half of the 20th century, getting to its worst with earthquake of 1985.

The existing roof geometry is accentuated creating a language of faceted surfaces. The articulated volume of the building’s front facade extends indoors to define the interior spaces, resulting in a dematerialization of the roof, wall and floor planes. A forced perspective is created, framing the extraordinary views out to the Santa Monica Bay.

The minimal, gallery-like living space is designed to accommodate the client’s extensive collection of contemporary art. Display niches, lighting and the configuration of the spaces are planned to enhance the experience of viewing the art.

The stair has cantilevering steel treads, each with a custom laser-cut pattern. Light from the skylight above filters through the perforated stair to project an ever-changing texture of shadow and light, enlivening the walls and floor.

A grand entry door made of a stainless steel tube frame marks the threshold into the relatively small house. The 10’ high door makes use of a hydraulic pivot and a concealed magnetic locking device.

The Gold Medal is the Institute’s highest individual architectural honor and is made in recognition of most successful services by an individual architect who has created buildings of exceptional merit or highly distinguished himself in the profession of architecture.

Peter Stutchbury, born 1954 in Sydney, is a multi-award-winning Australian architect. He is a professor in architecture at the University of Newcastle, Stutchbury, and also a founding director of the Architecture Foundation Australia, having also taught at the foundation’s Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class since its inception in 2001.

His clients include some of the world’s most renowned designers, such as Issey Miyake for which he designed a house in a breath taking location on top of a cliff in Japan.

The 61 year old architect recently sparked controversy when publicly showcasing his new home, a 45 square metre ”tent house” which was aimed to challenge the convention of living in suburban Australia.

By removing existing floors, extending the roof space and re-planning the circulation routes, the new facility yields a double height rehearsal room of a similar size to the main Donmar stage, a street fronting green room, administration offices, a large education studio in the roof rafters and a new attic apartment for visiting artists.

Stripped back and partially demolished walls and ceilings have been left raw as a suitably theatrical backdrop to the Donmar’s working life, with a new polychromatic staircase, hand painted by Haworth Tompkins’ regular collaborating artist Antoni Malinowski, as the warm heart of the building. Scenographer and production designer Lucy Osborne has collaborated closely on finishing and furnishings, reinforcing the collective sense of a theatre production as much as a construction project.

As for many of Haworth Tompkins’ creative working spaces in existing buildings, the personality of the historic architecture has been allowed to set the tone, with a provisional, loose-fit language of new additions setting up a fluid, adaptable relationship of new and old. Materials added have been simple and straightforward – whitewashed plywood, painted timber beams and wall coverings, waxed mild steel – to complement the richly patinated texture of the found surfaces. The aim is very much for a benign occupation rather than an obliteration of the original fabric.

Completed in 2012, the Solo Pezo holiday house is set atop a hill overlooking a landscape of olive groves, vineyards and rounded rocky peaks. More of a sculptural tribute to M. C. Escher than a house, the building consists of a rectangular volume that sits atop a much narrower pedestal-like base. After entering through a bifurcated staircase into a dark corridor, you arrive at the main part of the house by climbing a spiral staircase. Designed to offer a 360-degree panorama, the house’s living areas are basically a continuous portico that has no exterior walls, but instead is lined with columns; almost invisible sliding glass walls and doors can be closed or opened, depending on the weather and the tenants’ wish for privacy. At the very centre of the whole structure is a square pool, itself nestled inside a ‘‘room without a ceiling’’ as the architects say, that interconnects the other rooms of the house. The overall effect is one of geometry made manifest – a play of light, volume and movement.

The goal for the pavilion was to “resolve and delineate structure, skin and ornamentation into a single unified system.” The skin’s colorful gradient is formed through the careful layout of the individual shingles. Each one is similar to the next, yet they’re all unique and made through digital fabrication. The shingles overlap each other, much like shingles do on a roof, creating double thickness and a more solid structure.

In order to maintain the rural character of the location, the assignment came with strict regulations limiting the volume allowed above the ground level. These limitation eventually proved to give rise to a rather sophisticated design filled with spatial solutions.

With the volume limited, Waterstudio decided to make a floor under ground level, providing extra surface within the limited dimensions of the building-envelope. Solutions for allowing daylight in the lower floor turned out to be the main architectural highlights.

The volume was taken up as a white frame outlining large surfaces of glass, making the whole villa rather transparent. Some touches of wood add subtlety and warmth to the scheme. The white frame curling along the facade closes off both ends of the house. In the middle the frame rises to mark the entrance.

The concept of transparency was maintained throughout the house by creating an open layout where, almost no doors are used. Typical eye catchers in the interior are the kitchen situated in the center of the house.

The architects made use of new technology already tested in prototypes that allow a weightless easy-carrying construction. Native raw material, slate and wood used in the finishing also promote the integration at the same time it confers invisibility to the houses, not allowing these to take the chief role which belongs to the centennial Park itself. Sustainability and ecology have always been one of the major concerns during the development of the project. The consistency and rationale for the intervention were attained by the layers and reinforced insulation, heating systems, water reuse, water solar panels, the low consumption lighting system using LED technology as well as the option of keeping the soil without any impermeable system, among other solutions. Each house comprises a studio with a bathroom and a kitchen.

Thus, the two TREE SNAKE HOUSES of Pedras Salgadas Park are objects that, using similar materials and technologies, point out to our imaginary: the primitive hut and the wild animal. Developed by the architects Luís Rebelo De Andrade And Tiago Rebelo De Andrade in cooperation with Modular System the project also foresees multiple purposes, which can be adapted to different landscapes and climates. More models of these houses like the MOUNTAIN SNAKE HOUSE, the RIVER SNAKE HOUSE and the SAND SNAKE HOUSE, whose dimensions and materials are easily adapted to various climates and regions, are being developed and will soon be available to the public. It will then be possible to acquire one of these houses and to benefit from different situations such as coastal areas, riverbanks, mountain or urban environments.

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the 40 shortlisted works that will compete for the 2015 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. In total, 420 works were nominated for the award. The final shortlist was drawn up by an expert Jury. The five finalists will present their projects on 7 May before the Jury decides the overall winner of the Prize, as well as the Emerging Architect Prize, at a celebration that will take place at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona on 8 May.

The store’s owner Catherine Pfisterer wanted the firm to keep the high ceilings of the existing space as well as retain some of the atmosphere that the building had in its raw state, while creating a strong identity for the shop.

Jan Maley of Hidden Fortress used black finishes to unify the space, covering all the surfaces in the same tone. A new mezzanine was created and lined with unpainted maritime pine to create a strong visual contrast between the levels.

“The challenge was to realise the same [black] tone in a variety of surfaces, materials and production methods,” said the designers.”Using maritime pine as a main component provides a strong image due to its large grain, in its original colour light white/yellowish as well as in tinted black.”

The same pine was used to create bespoke fittings for the lower floor as well as a staircase that dominates the middle of the space.”Thus the upper floor with its strongly different atmosphere could at the same time be integrated and separated from the darker main floor,” explained the designers.

Enclosed on four sides by pine wood walls, the staircase is painted black on the outside with the inner surfaces left natural.
It projects out from the mezzanine level, but never actually touches the floor, creating the illusion of floating stairs. Its casing provides the structural strength to keep the staircase rigid.
Downstairs, the designers created a bespoke display system of square frames to cover a wall at the front of the space. Individual shelving modules made in three different sizes can be attached to the frames and moved around to accommodate different heights and sizes of objects.
“The arrangement of the modules in the framework can result in a strongly geometrical image or in a playful seemingly more chaotic structure,” said the designers.

Made from laser-cut, powder-coated aluminium, these modules share the same triangular profile from the side, but have different widths and depths. Smaller modules made from copper and glass match accents used on display cases elsewhere in the store.

A black pine counter occupies the space along the wall on the other side of the shop, while a lower display plinth made from the same material sits in between.

A rectangular metal lighting rig on the ceiling provides a flexible lighting arrangement for a set of strong spotlights, that can slide on runners and pivot on hinges to change the angle of each beam.
At the back of the ground floor, a kitchen has been created for making tea for staff and customers. It is also used for displaying the store’s range of kitchen items.
The kitchen features a copper sink and pipework, intended to create a connection between the displays and the functional elements of the store.
The rear area downstairs is lit by groups of three spotlights set into the ceiling, arranged in regular intervals.

“The divisions and connections between these areas and between the two floors, are designed to allow a variety of new perspectives while one wanders around in the space,” said the designers.
“This softens the division between the upper and lower area, and contradicts the stronger division of dark downstairs and light upstairs. The result is a strong feeling of a homogeneous space in spite of its division between the two floors.”

The mezzanine level provides further display space for furniture and large items, and is fronted by a glass wall to create a visual connection as well as a sense of openness that prevents this smaller space from feeling cramped.
A continuous strip of lighting is embedded into the joints between the walls and the ceiling around the edges of the space.

Izaskun Chinchilla, a tutor at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, proposed a pavilion that will use discarded objects and materials to recreate forms commonly found in nature.

Reminiscent of both flowers and trees, the structure will comprise a canopy of branches made out of recycled materials, including old umbrellas, stools, damaged bicycle wheels and tripods. According to the architect, several institutions already recycle these items, so they should be easy to source.

At the end of the summer, these clusters of materials are envisioned for further reuse.

“Branches can be easily reused as sun, wind and rain protectors in windows, terraces or outdoor spaces all around the city. Bigger elements can be beautiful indoor chandeliers,” said Chinchilla.

BanG Studio’s proposal is for a structure built from some of the same materials that The New York Harbor School uses to cultivate oyster growth in New York’s rivers and bays, from nylon rope and hose clamps, to perforated domed objects known as “reef balls”.

When the pavilion is eventually dismantled, these materials will be donated to the school in support of its Billion Oyster Project – an initiative to restore one billion live oysters in New York’s harbour over the next 20 years.

The competition was run by cultural organisation Figment, the AIA’s Emerging New York Architects Committee and the Structural Engineers Association of New York.

Dispersion 2 is designed for restoring Su-in narrow-gauge train like Dispersion 1, but inside seats. This railway had about 900mm width and people have diverse memories its narrow interior. The quality of railway and railbed was not good enough and riding was not comfortable at all. Standing passengers had experienced hard time from shaking. Besides, facing seats are so close to let one person walk through barely.

Dispersion 2 is restored one side of interior of narrow-gauge train and the other side is dispersed into the park. Visitors can experience its impressive narrowness. At the same time, sitting old woman’s figure brings up the past atmosphere. Through this, visitors can perceive the newly restored interior of narrow-gauge train from the past and the interior melting into the present at the same time. Demateriality and surreality from stainless steel will provide visual refreshment and amusement. As a part of a series with Dispersion 1, Dispersion 2 allows unity to environment of Su-in Line Memorial Park.

Each winter, some 50,000 visitors from all over the world come to see ICEHOTEL to experience the tranquility, the northern lights and all of the activities offered in Europe’s last wilderness 200 km north of the Arctic Circle.

ICEHOTEL covers 5,500 square meters and is constructed from 1,000 tonnes of Torne River ice and 30,000 tons of “snice”, a mixture of snow and ice that strengthens the structure. Around 100 people are involved in the construction of ICEHOTEL, half of which are artists especially invited to design particular areas of the hotel. The construction is a year-round process. Between March and April, 5,000 tons of ice is harvested from the Torne River and kept in cold storage during spring and summer. Construction takes place in November and December and the entire ICEHOTEL is then open between December and mid-April, when everything begins to slowly melt and return to the Torne River.

The master plan and buildingproject was the winner of an international design competition by invitation put on in 2012 by the People’s Government of Yanqing County Beijing, part of the Chinese government. This is a major recognition for Italian design and architecture. The Chinese government built the project with great skill and speed given the exceptional scope and importance of the works built. Pavilions have been deisgned as circles as a metaphor for grape bunches spread over the landscape. The overall image forges an extraordinary relationship with the surrounding nature and the contour of mountains on the horizon.

The Flat Side of the Knife combines physical spaces with illusory spaces that appear only in mirrors, reflecting what the artist refers to as “layers of consciousness,” akin to psychological and hallucinatory spaces in the mind. Her use of mirrors in conjunction with sculptural elements made from a silvery insulation board, known commercially as Rmax or Thermax, allows the illusion of space to expand in multiple directions; creating imaginary depth below the gallery floor, for instance, or suggesting adjacent rooms that do not actually exist.

This pavilion provides a new central cafeteria and event space for Trumpf’s Stuttgart-based industrial campus and headquarters. It is the new social center for the company for both blue and white-collar workers. The building is conceived of as a freestanding pavilion (as opposed to the nearby factories which are continuously expanded on) enhancing its role visibly on the campus as the event space it is intended for. The pavilion, with seating for 700, enables the company’s 2000 employees to lunch around three time slots in the large central space with reserve seating in a mezzanine. When programmed for events, the space functions as an auditorium with seating for 800.

The exhibition organized by arc en rêve highlights the working methods of Studio Mumbai in three sequences. By way of introduction, Bijoy Jain shares his vision of India, the vast sub-continent that provides him with an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The major part of the gallery is occupied by materials, models and prototypes that reveal the reality of both on-going and built projects. The Leti 360 refuge is a good example. Built at an altitude of 2,300 metres in the foothills of the Himalayas, this building has been designed with particular attention to environmental impact and respect for local culture. It has been designed to be built by hand: all the building materials are calibrated so that they can be carried by workers, with only mules for assistance. The design ensures that the refuge is well adapted to extreme weather conditions and the changing seasons.

As an epilogue to the exhibition, visitors are invited on a journey through Mumbai by night. “On my first encounter with Studio Mumbai I scribbled in my notebook: “Bamboo must be cut when there is no moon – why? The mountains have the power to call for feelings of fascination and fear at the same time. Switzerland has a strong tradition of observing the Alps, living with them, hiding inside them. The awe and the anxiety that this monumental landscape appeals is reflected in the writings of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, one of the most important Swiss writers. His novels, Derborence, describes the massive rock fall that covered the pastures of the valley of Lizerne in 1714. Antoine, the main character, survives seven weeks under the rocks before he manages to reach his village, and life.

ANTOINE is a tribute to the alpine experience and to the writer. The small wooden cabin, big enough for the life of one man, is hidden inside a projected concrete rock. Referring to the long lasting Swiss tradition of hidden bunkers, the project integrates the highly urbanised landscape of the Alps. Already described by the French philosopher Paul Virilio in 1975, military architecture conducted by principles of camouflage has, for long, fascinated the architects.

ANTOINE creates an alpine shelter, a precarious «Existenzminimum» somewhat subversive in its use where one can freely enter and hide. It contains the very basic architectural elements – fire place, bed, table, stool, window – but demands to the visitor some risk taking as the rock hangs literally on the rock fall field.

ANTOINE was a commission by the artist residency Verbier 3d Foundation. It was self-built in the village and transported to the high-altitude sculpture park. The 6 weeks residency allowed for the construction of what can be considered an inhabited sculpture that follows the tradition of architecture-sculpture described by artist André Bloc and developed physically by André Bloc and Claude Parent.

A new sculptural stair built of hot rolled steel, maple veneer, and frosted glass becomes the focal point of the house. The counter of the central island in the kitchen cantilevers 2.4 meters out from the cabinets becoming the dining table, uniting preparation and eating spaces. Two pivoting glass doors close off the entry creating a winter vestibule. The immense stone fireplace was conserved and restored. It’s textured materiality contrasts with the purity of the new elements. The exterior of the house was restored and repainted and the windows were replaced. A contemporary dormer was added to the roof of the house containing the two second floor bathrooms

Ground floor operates mostly as public or semi-public space with multiple grand landscape views as on the other hand the upper floor stands very private with sky views only. The space is divided with two inserted wooden volumes which in ground floor contain kitchen with dining or bathroom and in the upper floor master bedroom and children’s room. House in a house concept allow each bedroom to perform as primarily wooden pitched house, where one literally feels like sleeping in his own (symbolic) house and not a room. The bridge connecting both houses acts as playroom.

The house has tree large square windows which open views towards hilltop church in Italy to the west, forest to the south and entrance platform to the east. The redefinition of traditional stony Karst roof, with its texture, colour, material and its steep inclination is executed as contemporary concrete interpretation with intense technological ingenuity. Materially inseparable connection between the facade and the roof is key allusion to the image of traditional Karst village.

The design of the house addresses the relationship between contemporary and tradition, it opens up the question about the characteristics of anonymous traditional built architecture from which it originates and simultaneously establishes the relationship between contemporary interpretation and traditionally conditional domain of synthesis.

Being in Andalucia, in the south of Spain, the idea was to create a huge garden with big covered outside spaces, giving some shade when needed, where you could live outside day and night, all year long. It’s all about catching that twilight with your friends and family, chilling out with some tapas and great Spanish wines.
At the same time we needed to create the necessary privacy towards the neighbouring buildings, so you could live outside without being exposed. The concept therefore is that the whole site is a garden surrounded with a peripheral wall filled with content, that’s the living room, a private garden.
Above that living room landscape we set a patio house – a house over a garden.
In the winter time, one covered part of the private garden can be closed with sliding windows and heated.

Periphery is central
The periphery, the surrounding wall are filled with different programs so it communicates with the centre space of the ground floor. These contents wrap around the living space / garden like a never ending landscape.
In the periphery there are :
still water pond with waterfall, turtles and morning sun, herb garden, kitchen, bbq lounge, pool lounge, swimming pool – chill out pool area, jungle, atelier / library, entrance lobby.

Depending of what time of the day, social occupancy and what mood one is in, you choose to interact with the peripheral programs, from leisure, sport to reading, chilling, cooking etc.
There is an over the edge opening along the poolside, where there is a beautiful view to the mountains and where the evening sun comes in.

The special cut of the new building of the Drehmo GmbH is owed the topographical situation in this region. The moving landscape caused the terracing of the landscape and produces irregularly shaped lot. The unusual floor plan, generated by this contour, and the hillside situation with a view over the valley determine the character and exceptional styling.

The basic arrangement consists of the assembly hall with the affiliated areas of the loading bay and an automatic shelf storage. The two-story administrative wing situated in front of the assembly hall forms with this an entrance situation. The basement accommodates staff rooms and the canteen, which is naturally lit via a courtyard and expands into this free area with glazing from floor to ceiling.

The client, who lives in a farmhouse of the 60s on the site, asked us to design a structure for renting out as a luxury holiday units, so guests have their small autonomous apartment and can fully enjoy the experience to live in the middle of nature. A maximum degree of privacy for both the client and the residing guest should be taken into consideration.

The new structure is oriented towards east with their private garden and an autonomous access and parking for their guests. Each unit contains a kitchen / living room as well as a bath- and bedroom with big openable skylights to allow natural light and ventilation. A small basement serves for temporary storage.

The projects initial volume is split in 2 units that are slightly shifted in height and length in order to loosening the entire structure and articulating their differentiation.

Both units are floating on a base above the ground evoking lightness beside offering better views from their cantilevering terraces to the impressive surrounding landscape. The volume opens towards east with a big glass facade that fades with curvilinear lines into the black aluminum shell. Mirrored glass on the west facade borders the garden of the client with the units and catches the surrounding panorama with pool while making the units almost invisible.

In certain views from the clients garden the old existing farmhouse is mirrored in the new contemporary architecture and is literally blending into it rather then competing against.

The End of Sitting is an installation at the crossroads of visual art, architecture, philosophy and empirical science. In our society almost the entirety of our surroundings have been designed for sitting, while evidence from medical research suggests that too much sitting has adverse health effects. RAAAF [Rietveld Architecture-Art Affordances] and visual artist Barbara Visser have developed a concept wherein the chair and desk are no longer unquestionable starting points.

Instead, the installation’s various affordances solicit visitors to explore different standing positions in an experimental work landscape. The End of Sitting marks the beginning of an experimental trial phase, exploring the possibilities of radical change for the working environment. This project is a spatial follow-up of the recently released mute animation ‘Sitting Kills’ by RAAAF | Barbara Visser, developed for the Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands.

The End of Sitting is a collaboration with Looiersgracht 60 (Soraya Notoadikusumo and Nadine Snijders), a new space for art and science in Amsterdam.

This is not your typical log cabin. Nor is it your typical square edged box‐like modern house or “A” frame. Instead, the home is graced by two large arching wing‐shaped roofs to shelter the main living space and bedroom areas. The two wings of the home offer very different experiences with the surrounding environment. In the main living space, the great room is slab‐on‐grade with a polished concrete floor that extends to the outside and feels “grounded”. The bedroom wing “takes flight” off the land – as the terrain gently slopes down, the building gradually steps up, culminating in a floating 3‐sided glass box in the master suite for a tree house experience. The entry to the home is defined by a third smaller curved roof structure, sheltering visitors and creating a softly defined separation between the outdoor courtyard space situated on the front, sunny exposure side of the home and the street beyond.

All the roof structures are created with huge curved glu‐lam beams. Because we place a large emphasis on passive solar design in our homes, the exterior gathering space wanted to be on the front side of the house to gain the best southern exposure. A deep overhang at the main gathering space creates a second protected outdoor gathering space, while shielding the home from the hotter summer sun. In the winter, when the sun dips lower in the sky, the sun penetrates into the inner spaces and with the polished concrete floor acting as a heat sink, absorbs this natural heat to warm the space. Overall, the home is heated with energy efficient radiant flooring. And there is no air conditioning. Instead, windows are strategically placed to allow cross ventilation through spaces for natural breezes.

Inside the home, spaces are left clean and unadorned to emphasize the sweeping curve of the roof when possible. As visitors travel down the gallery hall to the main living space, a series of cedar‐clad boxes sit within the larger space where the glu‐lam beams rise above. In terms of materials, the exterior is clad in stained cedar siding and Corten steel. An emphasis was placed on low maintenance materials. The roof is a combination of standing seamed metal roofing where visible, but the majority of the home’s roof is actually a single ply membrane “cool roof” for better energy efficiency in the warmer summer months.

We selected a muted natural palette for the interior spaces, using woods in their natural colorations with no tinting or stains. The floors in the elevated wing of the house are sustainably harvested teak. Walls and ceilings are clad in cedar. And all cabinetry throughout is walnut. Other wall surfaces were painted a crisp white to function as gallery space for our clients’ art collection. Light fixtures and tile products were all selected and placed to emphasize the long horizontal lines of the building and to pick up the mid-century modern vibe our clients loved.

This home puts a modern twist on what a mountain home should be. We were fortunate to work with clients who could see the sculptural beauty in the design and wanted to create a piece of art in the forest. Flight House was the result of marrying modern design with a mountain environment, with a little drama thrown in for good measure.

Remarkable overlapping uses, interesting spatial sequences, diverse applicability are the results of an exemplary cooperation in between the constructor and the designer. The basic thought which runs throughout the whole project and which represents the label monovolume is an intelligent architecture and an audacious design which react on the environment taking advantage on its characteristics.

In 2015 Serpentine Galleries celebrates the 15th anniversary of the world-renowned Pavilion commission. Over the past 15 years the Serpentine Pavilion has become an international site for architectural experimentation, presenting inspirational temporary structures by some of the world’s greatest architects. A much-anticipated landmark in London each summer, the Pavilion is one of the top-ten most visited architectural and design exhibitions in the world.

Serpentine Galleries announces that Spanish architects SelgasCano will design the 15th Serpentine Pavilion. The award-winning studio, headed by José Selgas and Lucía Cano, is the first Spanish architecture practice to be asked to design the temporary Pavilion on the Serpentine’s lawn in London’s Kensington Gardens. In keeping with the criteria of the scheme, this will be the studio’s first new structure in the UK, with plans set to be revealed in February 2015.

SelgasCano’s design follows Smiljan Radić’s Pavilion in 2014, which was likened by many to a spaceship resting on Neolithic stones. Previous architects include Sou Fujimoto, 2013; Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, 2012; Frank Gehry, 2008; Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup, 2006; Oscar Niemeyer, 2003; Daniel Libeskind with Arup, 2001; and Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural Pavilion in 2000.
