For the 2014 spring exhibition season, the Serpentine Galleries have invited the influential London-based Italian designer Martino Gamper to curate a groundbreaking presentation of contemporary design at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, alongside an expansive presentation of works by Israeli-born artist Haim Steinbach at the Serpentine Gallery, which he will juxtapose with objects selected from two national museums.
These exhibitions will be the second design-focused shows to be presented in the Serpentine’s expanded exhibition spaces, representing the continued development of the Gallery’s long standing commitment to design. By highlighting objects that have made a significant impact on our lives, both Martino Gamper and Haim Steinbach’s exhibitions will provide new perspectives from which to look at the material world around us and encourage new insights into contemporary design.
For his exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery in spring 2014, Design is a State of Mind, Gamper will examine the role of the chair in contemporary design, specifically looking at examples outside of the classic canon of design history.
Both exhibitions will be accompanied by a publication produced especially on the occasion of Martino Gamper and Haim Steinbach’s shows.
Martino Gamper’s practice engages in a variety of projects from exhibition design, interior design, specialist one-off commissions and the design of mass-produced products for the cutting edge of the international furniture industry. Gamper’s renowned exhibition 100 Chairs in 100 Days in October 2007 showcased a collection of chairs over two floors of large mid-Victorian house in London’s South Kensington.
Gamper has been awarded Moroso Award for Contemporary Art, 2011; Wallpaper* Award for Best Use of Colour, 2011; Wallpaper* Award for Best Alchemist, 2008; Brit Insurance Designs of the Year and Winner of Furniture Award Category for 100 Chairs in 100 Days, 2008.
