The project, inspired by the beauty, fragility and complexity of ice crystal formations, delivers a collection of lights, which capture the magical, recurring transformation of this phenomenon observed in nature.
The glass lamps, hand blown in London, use the light’s temperature fluctuations to choreograph the change of state of the ice like substance enclosed in the glass. With the warmth of the bulb, the material begins to thaw, gradually revealing the ‘hot heart’ of the lamp as the ice crystals disappear. With time, the light source changes into a cold one, which triggers the clear, melted liquid to start freezing once more.
Over time, crystals form and expand across the glass, generating an elaborate network of forms.
Parallel to no snowflake in the world being alike, each formed pattern on the glass is uniquely structured, making the object one of a kind at every cycle.
The project in made in collaboration with Lucy Norman.
