WELL, Rick Owens sure knows how to throw a curveball. It would be safe to say we were expecting another rendition of draped layers, asymmetrical hemlines and sweeping lengths from his spring/summer 2014 collection today – think again, it was anything but. Taking his inspiration from African-American stepping – where the whole body is used as an instrument to make sounds by stamping, clapping and spoken word – Owens delivered a collection of zipped-up, laced-up and tough-talking separates in which his 40-strong model troop pounded the catwalk with force. The troop themselves are actually “steppers” – Owens selected them from four sorority teams: Momentum, Zetas, Washington Divas and Soul Steppers – and they gave it their all in thigh-skimming shifts, tribal sheaths and combative leather panels. While today’s show may be remembered less for the clothes and more for the concept, it’s refreshing to see a seasoned designer shake things up like this.
