Prospect.3: Notes for Now
A project of Prospect New Orleans
In direct relation to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art across the street, Prospect.3: Notes for Now at the Contemporary Art Center of New Orleans is intended as an exploration of global and universal trends in contemporary art today. The work on display aggregates current artistic movements and concerns, positing distinct perspectives from around the world in relation to one another. While the work at the Ogden locates P.3 historically and geographically, focusing on the different ways the spirit and ways of the South form the basis of many contemporary art practices, the exhibition at the CAC expands to offer a multiplicity of ways that artists choose to address universal issues across the world.
Sophie T. Lvoff moved from New York to New Orleans in 2009, drawn to the romantic South masterfully documented by such photographers as Walker Evans and William Eggleston. Since then, she has been entranced by the mystical beauty of the city. While the light, color palette, and prominence of tradition in the region are now the foundation of her practice, she has become equally aware of the threats to this beauty. From both environmental and sociological perspectives, and further influenced by the political and social atmosphere, Lvoff situates her practice as a “truthful” display of the South, beyond its celebrations and devastations.
