In a world shifting between the analog and the digital, Studio Roosegaarde is the social design lab of artist Daan Roosegaarde with his team of designers and engineers. The studio creates interactive designs that explore the dynamic relation between people, technology and space. The studio develops its own technology and is internationally known for interactive projects such as Dune, Intimacy and Smart Highway.
Roosegaarde has been the focus of exhibitions at Tate Modern, National Museum in Tokyo, Victoria and Albert Museum and winner of numerous international innovation awards. Studio Roosegaarde also has a strong experience with public space commissions for the city of Rotterdam, Singapore, Eindhoven and Stockholm.
DUNE is the public interactive landscape that interacts with human behavior. This hybrid of nature and technology is composed of large amounts of fibers that brighten according to the sounds and motion of passing visitors.
Evolving through several contexts DUNE 4.1 enhances social interactions in the public pedestrian Maastunnel, commissioned by the Rotterdam City of Architecture.
The 60 meter permanent DUNE 4.2, situated alongside the Maas River in Rotterdam (NL), utilizes fewer than 60 watts of energy. Within this setting, Rotterdam citizens enjoy their daily “walk of light”.
INTIMACY is a high-tech fashion project exploring the relation between intimacy and technology. Its high-tech garments entitled ‘Intimacy White’ and ‘Intimacy Black’ are made out of opaque smart e-foils that become increasingly transparent based on close and personal encounters with people.
Social interactions determine the garmentsʼ level of transparency, creating a sensual play of disclosure.
‘Wind 3.0′ exists out of hundreds of fibers which, through a merging of electronics and ventilators, move and interact with the visitor. ‘Wind 3.0′ plays with the relation and differences between nature and technology. The hundred of ventilators stimulate this sensation straight to the skin; prepared to be blown away!
