Award winning conversion and extension of a listed Air Raid Bunker in Berlin to accommodate the contemporary art collection of Christian Boros. This World War II building now houses approximately 3.000m2 of exhibition spaces. A 500m2 roof extension provides living space for the art collector and his family.

The existing bunker was surrounded by a 1,8 meter thick perimeter concrete wall and a 3 meter thick concrete ceiling. Outer additions were removed, the facades were cleaned and structurally refurbished.

To create suitable exhibition spaces, selected ceilings and walls were then cut to join spaces both horzontally and vertically. A new route now runs through the building on every floor. In some of spaces the existing ceiling height of 2,3 meters has been kept while other now have up to triple ceiling height of 7,5 meters. The corner rooms have partly been connected horizontally as well as vertically creating diverse and complex spaces.

In addition to the traditional so called ‘white cube’ spaces, the structural and spatial interaction between art and architecture was staged. Art can be viewed from different floors and angles and supports the orientation within the building. Only selected walls were plastered. Diverse wall surfaces, ceilings and floors and traces of the building’s history remain visible.
