LIBRARY BY THE SEA by Vector Architects

The library is located along the seashore of China Bohai Bay. The design key point is focused on exploring the co-existing relationship of the space boundary, the movement of human body, the shifting light ambience, the air ventilating through and the ocean view.

The design began with section. The library houses a reading area, a meditation space, activity room, a drinking bar and a resting area. According to each space, we establish distinctive relationship between space and the ocean; define how light and wind enters into each room.

From church to offices by CLS architetti

from the architects: The church of San Paolo Converso houses the new headquarters of CLS architetti. The “Firm in the Church” – a project created by the firm’s architects themselves and inaugurated at the end of 2014 – is a structure located inside the church. The church of San Paolo Converso, dating back to the 16th century and decorated with fresco paintings by the Campi brothers, is divided in a front church and a rear church. The front church is open to the public and consists of a single chamber with an entirely decorated barrel vault and side chapels, at the centre of which rises the altar.

The rear church is reserved to the cloistered nuns of the adjacent convent. These two sections communicate visually through the upper lunette on the wall behind the altar. The reception is located at the entrance of the front church, the library in the altar area, and a first meeting room in the area connecting the two churches. A four-floor iron structure built in the rear section houses the offices and the various planning areas. All this without affecting the original construction in any way. An iron staircase connects the floors crossing the entire length of the parallelepiped structure.

The last floor houses the partners’ offices and the meeting room, which protrudes over the front part through the lunette, thereby dominating the entire space with a unique view. The iron structure is open on all sides, thereby allowing you to admire the frescoes from different levels. The library, plastic model laboratory, and the kitchen are in the groin-vaulted crypt, which features a double row of four columns dating back to the 16th century. The entire project is made of natural black tubular iron, whose cross-section is repeated in different scales both in the construction of the weight-bearing structure and in the furnishes, such as the desks and bookcases designed for this space. The flooring and worktops are covered with grey rubber, thereby making the various areas visually homogeneous.

The lighting is the result of a light engineering study carried out together with Flos: tailor-made hand blown neon lights attached directly to the iron structure. A complex lighting system lights the frescoes and volumes from various sources. In addition, the particularity of the place has required an acoustics study to ensure proper soundproofing for the open spaces on all four floors. The partners of the firm have decided to make the front church a place dedicated to creative disciplines, where international guests can organise their exhibitions, performances, and installations open to the public.

The designers reveal their inspirations and process behind the creations.

Louis Vuitton enriches the Objets Nomades collection of foldable furniture and travel accessories, created in collaboration with several international designers and presented for the first time during Design Miami in 2012. This year the Objets Nomades collection reveals a new collaboration with 3 talented designers: the Raw Edges, Gwenaël Nicolas and Damien Langlois-Meurinne, revealing their inspirations and experiences while working with Louis Vuitton.

Raw Edges discusses their Concertina Collection: “We loved the challenge of working on a collection of collapsible objects, with the focus on how to make them look large, surprising and with real presence when they are expanded”.
Gwenaël Nicolas, taking inspiration by Ernest Hemingway’s African travels, has created the Ernest Bed and the Miller Lamp, which were ”an opportunity to discover a mysterious world” and, about his collaboration with Louis Vuitton, he loved “the idea that the designer could propose the object he wanted to design: it’s a very personal and serious commitment”.

The Valet and the Totem Floral by Damien Langlois-Meurinne, spawned from his idea: “A designer is nothing without the savoir-faire of the artisans who bring his ideas and sketches to life”. The Raw Edges, Gwenaël Nicolas and Damien Langlois-Meurinne have increased the existing collaborations beside some of the most creative designers of our time: Campana Brothers, Patricia Urquiola, Barber & Osgerby, Nendo, Maarten Baas and Atelier Oï. Hotel Hotel by March Studio

”March studio have designed the stair and lobby for Canberra’s Hotel Hotel, so nice they named it twice! The dynamic space marking the entry to the hotel. The grand gesture is composed of reclaimed timber, blurring boundaries while directing views and movement. March Studio was engaged to create spaces which encouraged residents, guests and visitors to linger in what can often be a transient space. Australia’s March Studio is responsible for some of the most interesting and innovative interiors at the moment.

In the stair the timber is heavy, grounded, a stacked agglomeration. Freed to scatter up the walls and across the ceiling, the suspended timber filters exterior light and views into and from internal spaces. Spidery, pixellated shadows are cast on the floor and bare walls. The stair linking the hotel and apartment buildings.

In this 68-room, 28-apartment hotel, no two rooms are alike. 50 makers, artists and creative studios developed the design of Hotel Hotel.

Brothers Johnathan and Nectar Efkarpidis are the founders of Hotel Hotel, located in NewActon, a diverse new precinct in Canberra, Nishi Commercial is a major new mixed development building housing government departments, private offices, a cinema and cafes.

The walls in the hotel lobby – and the seating, the benches, the counters – are an attempt to bring the handmade into the rigorous, polished building around it. Materials – custom gluelam timber, precast concrete beams – are allowed to sit, unadorned, stacked in a simple manner, overlapping, their joints overrunning and poking out.

The singular system – the same for both materials – is stretched where needed, opened where useful, broken where forced. A large space is enveloped in this manner and then diffused, variegated by operations within these rules, to allow for spaces which have their own character.

Doors that are part opening, part display, continue this language in apparently weightless steel. This steel is picked up to lighten the bar, where stacked concrete props up sleek steel, which weaves into and halts the flow of suspended timber bursting up the stairs from the commercial lobby. Above the seating in front of the bar, large holes have been punched into the concrete slab capping the space. These portholes allow glimpses into the courtyard above and natural light to enter the space.

The main entrance to Nishi Residential, opposite the linking stair, was also part of March Studio’s brief. Outside is a canopy which shrugs off its weight with flowing timber recalling the Commercial Lobby.

The entrance airlock is lined on two walls and ceiling with what could be steel punchcards for an ancient mainframe. Filling the gaps punched in these steel sandwich panels are amber marbles, thick glass which filters the light and warms the space. The directionality of the commercial lobby is mirrored here, in the lines of punched holes on wall and ceiling, which scatter across the rear wall and flow into the stacked timber of the Hotel Hotel library. ”

Geometric Furniture by Aljoud Lootah

Dubai-based product designer Aljoud Lootah created a collection of geometric furniture and objects that aim to explore form and function. The dramatic angles appear to almost be folded, like origami, which is where the collection gets its name – The Oru Series.

“Oru” originates from the Japanese worlds “to fold”, and each of the pieces takes inspiration as if the idea behind the design began as a flat, two-dimensional sheet of paper that was then folded into a functional, three-dimensional object. You can almost imagine each of the finished pieces folding up to a flat piece of paper, can’t you?

Vaulted Willow

Commissioned by the Edmonton Arts Council, Marc Fornes / THEVERYMANY designed and built Vaulted Willow, an “architectural folly” within Borden Park in Edmonton, Canada. Constructed out of 721 aluminum stripes, 14,043 connectors, and 60 epoxy concrete anchors, the architectural sculpture explores these lightweight, self-supported shells “through the development of custom computational protocols of structural form-finding and descriptive geometry.”

The goal for the pavilion was to “resolve and delineate structure, skin and ornamentation into a single unified system.” The skin’s colorful gradient is formed through the careful layout of the individual shingles. Each one is similar to the next, yet they’re all unique and made through digital fabrication. The shingles overlap each other, much like shingles do on a roof, creating double thickness and a more solid structure.

Njörd, Spirit of the wind — Light installation

Wecomeinpeace won the Recylum Trophée of Sustainable Enlightenment at the Light Festival of Lyon, with Njörd, the spririt of the Wind, an original creation that transformed the courtyard of the City Hall in a modern sanctuary.
On an immersive soundtrack, the installation showcases 26 light monoliths, within which fly feathers in an aerial ballet.
Njörd is a reference to the scandinavian god of wind, and also refers to the refined contemporary Nordic design. The installation draws up a mysterious landscape between mythologic scenery and modern space design.
Finally, it is a technical challenge that synchronizes sound, light, wind tunnel and moving complexe elements.

For their first project for Camper Together, they discovered the inspiration in traditional folkloric Brazilian festivities, where involving environments are created by dense layers of colored stripes.

Using that strategy with shoe laces they modeled different shapes that implements in our space a sensitive and scenographic experience, where the visitors are the everyday actors.

Yusuke Seki and Majotae Exhibition

Taima-fu (hemp fabric) has been an integral part of Japanese culture since the beginning of its history. However, due to significant restriction on cannabis cultivation after World War II, and apparent difficulties in spinning hemp threads which delayed industrialization, it is a rare fabric today.

Cocoa’s country of origin, kind, percentage content, technique of the chocolatier’s, the flavours inside…
There are many factors that determine a chocolate’s taste.

In coming up with a new chocolate concept, we turned out attention not to such factors, but to the chocolate’s “shape.”

The 9 different types of chocolate are made within the same size, 26x26x26mm,
featuring pointed tips, hollow interiors, smooth or rough surface textures–
and, while the raw materials are identical, the distinctive textures create different tastes.

Each chocolate is directly named after Japanese expressions used to describe texture.

1. “tubu-tubu” Chunks of smaller chocolate drops.
2. “sube-sube” Smooth edges and corners.
3. “zara-zara” Granular like a file.
4. “toge-toge” Sharp pointed tips.
5. “goro-goro” Fourteen connected small cubes.
6. “fuwa-fuwa” Soft and airy with many tiny holes.
7. “poki-poki” A cube frame made of chocolate sticks.
8. “suka-suka” A hollow cube with thin walls.
9. “zaku-zaku” Alternately placed thin chocolate rods forming a cube.

Form Us With Love: more colourful acoustic panels to Baux range

Swedish studio Form Us With Love has extended the range of colourful construction materials offered by its brand Baux to include acoustic panels – the second set launching in Stockholm this week (+ slideshow).
Following the launch of BAUX last year, Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér of Form Us With Love have continued their collaboration with entrepreneurs Johan Ronnestam and Fredrik Franzon.

The team has now added to its collection of colourful acoustic tiles made from wood wool – a mixture of spruce wood, water and cement – and has used the material to create larger panels.
The BAUX products will be presented at this year’s Stockholm Design Week, where Oslo studio StokkeAustad is also presenting acoustic panels.
Form Us With Love designed each panel to measure 116 by 53 centimetres, allowing users to cover larger surfaces more efficiently than with the smaller tiles.
These are designed to be used in combinations of colours and patterns as decorative wall features in homes, offices and public spaces.

“The acoustic panel collection inspires us to create holistic interiors at scale,” said Form Us With Love. “By using large patterns, we can integrate empty walls and open planned spaces in a both practical and emotional way.”
The patterns include check, horizontal, vertical, diagonal and quilt, available in a selection of 22 colours and chosen to echo Scandinavian landscapes.
“The pattern resembles the view of nature that we are surrounded by, imagine the scenic view from a train or car window while travelling at high speed through a Nordic landscape – deep blues, dark greens and earthy browns,” said the team.
Wood wool used to form the panels is manufactured with zero waste in the forests of Småland, Sweden, where local spruce trees supply the timber.
To demonstrate the product, the team built a wall in the heart of the woodland and covered it with panels in green and blue hues.

Power Hammer by Atelier Van Lieshout at Grimm Gallery

Power Hammer shows new sculptures based on machines and tools as an extension of the The New Tribal Labyrinth series which Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) aims to start a Neo-Industrial Revolution with. AVL wants to reinterpret and revalue factories, manual labour and installations of the Industrial Revolution by creating sculptures made in an improvised style with contemporary materials. In our contemporary Western society it seems that physical labour is reserved for ‘others’, leaving us solely occupied with form. AVL states that as a society we cannot just consume and use; real products should be made and grown around us. AVL wants to see a return to the idealism of production, where the shape and character of the material determines the design.

The new sculptures in this exhibition not only refer to the romantic longing for a return to Industry, but further to this, Industry is honoured by emphasizing the fact that it brought our Western society freedom, wealth and prosperity.

The focus on social utopia and alternative models of life can be traced throughout the work of AVL. While the focus of production at AVL could initially be found in the motif of freedom (the most radical implementation of which was the declaration of a free state AVL-Ville in 2001 at the port of Rotterdam), an intense exploration of restrictive systems has followed in subsequent years. This new series of work, New Tribal Labyrinth, reflects on our complex contemporary society in which inordinate consumption meets limited resources.
In this ongoing ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, AVL suggests an alternative world order in which imaginary tribes constitute a new society, thus facilitating a return to a simple and self-sufficient way of life.

Joep van Lieshout explains: “Industry used to play a vital role, as it enabled societies based on farming to reach a higher level of development and prosperity. Nowadays however, everything that reminds us of physical production has been banned from our society, and has subsequently been removed from our sight. Our role is only to design, no longer to produce. In fact, all the things which we find undesirable seems to have been banished. Farm animals disappear into anonymous mega-stables, prisons and mental institutions get moved out to remote business parks. The only thing left in our sanitized world is consumption: retail, recreation, restaurants. This reinvention of the industrial revolution wants to make a link with, but at the same time transcend, the utopian socialist Arts and Crafts movement that tried to close the gap between designer, producer and user. Just like the Arts and Crafts movement wanted to protect craftsmanship against the effects of industrialization, AVL wants to protect Industry. Industry and production should be a part of our society, as should be manual labour, pollution and hardship. As a society we cannot just consume and use, real products should be made and grown.”

Dispersion by Yong Ju Lee

Su-in Line was opened in 1937. Its narrow-gauge railway was shut down in 1995 and younger generation does barely know about it. However, older people have lots of memories about beautiful beach and saltern, where the train passed by. Moreover, its stops attracted many photographers by aged and unique views.
Located in Su-in Line Memorial Park, Dispersion 1 is designed for restoring part of narrow-gauge train at one end and being melt into its surroundings at the other. Visitors can experience restored train from dispersed memories as well as the train in the memories melting into the park. This gives people new perception in space and time, who have its memory or not. They can guess the physical train size in history by walking through it. Whole parts are made of one material -stainless steel, which makes strong contrast to nature in park with reflection. By its surreal dispersing figure in the air, Dispersion 1 also provides visual rhythm and whimsy to surroundings.

Dispersion 2 is designed for restoring Su-in narrow-gauge train like Dispersion 1, but inside seats. This railway had about 900mm width and people have diverse memories its narrow interior. The quality of railway and railbed was not good enough and riding was not comfortable at all. Standing passengers had experienced hard time from shaking. Besides, facing seats are so close to let one person walk through barely.

Dispersion 2 is restored one side of interior of narrow-gauge train and the other side is dispersed into the park. Visitors can experience its impressive narrowness. At the same time, sitting old woman’s figure brings up the past atmosphere. Through this, visitors can perceive the newly restored interior of narrow-gauge train from the past and the interior melting into the present at the same time. Demateriality and surreality from stainless steel will provide visual refreshment and amusement. As a part of a series with Dispersion 1, Dispersion 2 allows unity to environment of Su-in Line Memorial Park.

X-elettrofonica gallery Painted in Blue

The project is a unique installation that takes up the thread of the first exhibition that D’Elia mounted for the gallery in 2010, Ieri distrattamente mi volsi a considerar altrui memorie (dalle quali mi ritrovai rinvigorito). On that occasion the artist had developed a system capable of causing mould to grow directly on prearranged spaces of the gallery. Using chemical agents and controlling the gallery temperature, D’Elia had limited himself to waiting for bona fide fungal proliferations to develop. The gallery, then, presented itself marked by these moulds: they themselves were the work on display. In that first installation D’Elia’s purpose was to show the “invisible”, that is to say the presence everywhere of life and of the passage of time.

This time the artist operates in the opposite direction: he employs the antivegetative; antifouling paint, a kind of paint used above all on ships and boats to stop the growth of algae, coral and mould on the hull. The protagonist of the work is still the gallery itself, transformed into an inhabited space and ideally semi-immersed in the antivegetative: pictures, sculptures and furniture all appear in the grip of antifouling paint, coloured its typical aseptic green, almost as if to block any proliferation of life.

With ANTIVEGETATIVA Davide D’Elia presents a project born out of the opposition between organic and synthetic, living and aseptic, hot and cold, formal and informal.

The exhibition is rounded off with a critical piece by Giulia Ferracci.

Icehotel: The Hotel That Melts Down Every Mid-April

ICEHOTEL is the world’s first and largest hotel built of snow and ice and it is situated in Jukkasjärvi, a small village in Northern Sweden with 1,100 residents and 1,000 dogs.

Each winter, some 50,000 visitors from all over the world come to see ICEHOTEL to experience the tranquility, the northern lights and all of the activities offered in Europe’s last wilderness 200 km north of the Arctic Circle.

ICEHOTEL covers 5,500 square meters and is constructed from 1,000 tonnes of Torne River ice and 30,000 tons of “snice”, a mixture of snow and ice that strengthens the structure. Around 100 people are involved in the construction of ICEHOTEL, half of which are artists especially invited to design particular areas of the hotel. The construction is a year-round process. Between March and April, 5,000 tons of ice is harvested from the Torne River and kept in cold storage during spring and summer. Construction takes place in November and December and the entire ICEHOTEL is then open between December and mid-April, when everything begins to slowly melt and return to the Torne River.

Robert Dabi is the mastermind behind ZIIIRO Watches. With ZIIIRO he took watch design to another level. You’ll understand why if you take a look at his work. We are pleased to announce you that we asked Robert Dabi several questions about his work:

How did you get to design watches?
That’s quite simple: I couldn’t find an interesting watch to buy, so I just designed one which I would like to wear myself. So I just started, without further particular plans. It was just a fun project and I wasn’t well versed with watches or product design in general. I ended up with something I thought would be really cool, so I continued to work on naming and branding, and also tried to learn about the possibilities in watch making. At that time, I got to know Derick who helped me with the following steps until that concept became reality.

It is clear that you are interested in the appearance of a watch. The imagination can go really far and there are some things that are probably not possible. How do you make a watch stylish as well as functional?
I noticed that I almost never needed to tell the time to the second. When somebody aksed me for the time, and I looked at my (traditional) watch, even if it was 11:44, I would always say quarter to twelve. I feel time is fluid and can be perceived differently and depending on the person, mood or situation. That’s why ZIIIRO isn’t about pure accuracy. I think nowadays the wrist watch has changed from an accurate time keeper to something that not only tells time, but also expresses your individuality. Our watches are just like that. Our watches don’t follow any guidelines of how a watch should look like. I don’t like to do things because others do it in a certain way, I always think things through from scratch and see what’s neccessary and what not.

Tell us what do you think it’s important when designing a watch.
A watch combines elements of graphic design, industrial design and maybe even architecture, the engineering part of the inner movement aside. But it incorporates all those things in a very small form factor. Even if all elements of a watch are relatively small, you have to put the same effort into its details as you would do when you design a poster, a chair or a house.

You started selling watches in 2010. Which were the most important challenges that you overcome over the years?
Having a graphic design / illustration background, I wasn’t versed with watches and product design before, so there had been lots of challenges. With just having conceptual ideas and not knowing anything about the technical aspects, I had to grow into it, and learn about different things. Basically I learned by trial and error, trying to avoid them next time, and trying to research for what can be done and what not. When I think back to day one, I think I already learned a lot, but there still is much to learn. And especially by making unconventional approaches, there always are new challenges you have to face. Some of them can be overcome, and some can’t.
What is the best asset of the Ziiiro watch?
That it’s fun wearing one and fun looking at it every time. We also often hear from customers that it’s a conversation starter.

The Ziiiro watches are a striking minimalist, at the same time being colourful. How do you get to put these two features together?
It’s in human’s nature to always look for the easiest way to achieve something. Minimal design does just that, that’s why I love it. It’s like the consciousness works, we filter out 99% of all noise around us and concentrate on the important things. That’s why the best designs are just natural. With watches, there is not only functional design, you also have to take in the fun & expressional part of jewellery. People wear them to express themselves. Those are the 2 things I try to put together when designing a watch.

It is interesting how well people reacted to Ziiiro. Why do you think this happened?
Because they are different than most watches and therefore catch someones attention pretty fast.

What are you working on at the present moment?
The last things I finished before my break had been our new website and taking photos of our newest model ZIIIRO Eclipse metallic. I just picked up work yesterday because my son was born 6 weeks ago. Today I continued to design a new watch casing, gotta see where this takes me.

Julio Le Parc transforms the Serpentine Sackler Galleries

The first major UK exhibition by Argentinian artist Julio Le Parc sees the Serpentine Sackler transformed with immersive light installations and the artist’s signature interactive games.
Argentinian-born artist Julio Le Parc (1928, lives in France) is known for creating artworks that dynamically animate and transform space through light. Featuring seminal installations and interactive works from the early 1960s to the present day, Le Parc’s playful and mesmerising exhibition transforms the Gallery and actively involves visitors.

Le Parc began to make geometrical abstract paintings in 1959 based on pre-determined systems, first in black and white, then in colour. In the early 1960s he began working in three dimensions, incorporating moving, projected and reflected lights. From 1964 onwards he began producing works based on distorting mirrors and the displacement of the spectator by means of labyrinths and play rooms.

He is known for using projected, moving, and reflected light to create works of art in constant flux. At the heart of his practice is a desire to experiment with our engagement and perception of art, thereby altering our perspective on the roles of the artist, spectator and the institution. Through his experimentation with light, Le Parc creates a situation of visual instability, in the work and in the viewer’s experience.

Frozen Trees is a temporary Christmas light display that creates an illuminated, frozen and fractal landscape that affects and alters the paths of pedestrians.Thirty cylindrical structures activate the square and serve as self-sufficient streetlights, which are placed throughout the square, creating a new contextual landscape and inviting visitors to discover new spatial experiences.

Using IKEA’s Rationell Variera plastic bags dispensers as the base module, this design takes advantage of the module’s unique shape. Additionally, Frozen Trees brings a domestic-sized object into the urban scale –thus dissociating it from its original function and leading to the loss of its identity as a single element, making a call for creativity and multi-functionality in the current socio-economic climate.

The mountains have the power to call for feelings of fascination and fear at the same time. Switzerland has a strong tradition of observing the Alps, living with them, hiding inside them. The awe and the anxiety that this monumental landscape appeals is reflected in the writings of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, one of the most important Swiss writers. His novels, Derborence, describes the massive rock fall that covered the pastures of the valley of Lizerne in 1714. Antoine, the main character, survives seven weeks under the rocks before he manages to reach his village, and life.

ANTOINE is a tribute to the alpine experience and to the writer. The small wooden cabin, big enough for the life of one man, is hidden inside a projected concrete rock. Referring to the long lasting Swiss tradition of hidden bunkers, the project integrates the highly urbanised landscape of the Alps. Already described by the French philosopher Paul Virilio in 1975, military architecture conducted by principles of camouflage has, for long, fascinated the architects.

ANTOINE creates an alpine shelter, a precarious «Existenzminimum» somewhat subversive in its use where one can freely enter and hide. It contains the very basic architectural elements – fire place, bed, table, stool, window – but demands to the visitor some risk taking as the rock hangs literally on the rock fall field.

ANTOINE was a commission by the artist residency Verbier 3d Foundation. It was self-built in the village and transported to the high-altitude sculpture park. The 6 weeks residency allowed for the construction of what can be considered an inhabited sculpture that follows the tradition of architecture-sculpture described by artist André Bloc and developed physically by André Bloc and Claude Parent.

The End of Sitting

The End of Sitting is an installation at the crossroads of visual art, architecture, philosophy and empirical science. In our society almost the entirety of our surroundings have been designed for sitting, while evidence from medical research suggests that too much sitting has adverse health effects. RAAAF [Rietveld Architecture-Art Affordances] and visual artist Barbara Visser have developed a concept wherein the chair and desk are no longer unquestionable starting points.

Instead, the installation’s various affordances solicit visitors to explore different standing positions in an experimental work landscape. The End of Sitting marks the beginning of an experimental trial phase, exploring the possibilities of radical change for the working environment. This project is a spatial follow-up of the recently released mute animation ‘Sitting Kills’ by RAAAF | Barbara Visser, developed for the Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands.

Serpentine Galleries announces that Spanish architects SelgasCano will design the 15th Serpentine Pavilion. The award-winning studio, headed by José Selgas and Lucía Cano, is the first Spanish architecture practice to be asked to design the temporary Pavilion on the Serpentine’s lawn in London’s Kensington Gardens. In keeping with the criteria of the scheme, this will be the studio’s first new structure in the UK, with plans set to be revealed in February 2015.

SelgasCano’s design follows Smiljan Radić’s Pavilion in 2014, which was likened by many to a spaceship resting on Neolithic stones. This project was carried out after a competition launched on the occasion of the reconstruction of the Saint-Vaast church, which was destroyed by a fire in 2006.
The sculpture is both mineral and metallic, consisting of a polygonal filigrane structure, fitted with translucent white alabaster panels.
From each vertex of the prism, LED projectors emit light, filtered through the alabaster plates, and the depth of the metallic structure, acting as a diffuser.
The form is based on a tetrahedron crystal, representing the regular microscopic structure of certain materials in their natural state.
The sculpture evokes the inherent spirituality of a place of worship by the representation of the geometric natural order.

The structural design is a contemporary three-dimensional interpretation of techniques used in traditional sacred architecture, where the supporting structure is detailed both functionally and aesthetically, to be sublimated until becoming expressive and meaningful. In this way, envelope and structure are united in a complex, but regular geometry.

Cut into thin panels, alabaster has exceptional qualities for filtering light and diffusing a soft palette of colours, ranging from pure white to light yellow. The diffused light reveals the veins of the material and the different shades of the stone.

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System with a mass two and a half times greater than the mass of all other planets in the Solar System combined. Named after the king of the gods, its Arabic name reflects is vastness (Mushtari means huge, giant). Designed as a single strand filled with living matter inspired by the form and function of the human gastrointestinal tract, this wearable is designed as a an organ system for consuming and digesting biomass, absorbing nutrients and expelling waste. Wanderers, An Astrobiological Exploration

Traveling to destinations beyond planet Earth involves voyages to hostile landscapes and deadly environments. Crushing gravity, amonious air, prolonged darkness, and temperatures that would boil glass or freeze carbon dioxide, all but eliminate the likelihood of human visitation. Wanderers explores the possibility of voyaging to the worlds beyond by visiting the worlds within. 3D printed wearable capillaries designed for interplanetary pilgrims are infused with synthetically engineered microorganisms to make the hostile habitable and the deadly alive. Each design is a codex of the animate and inanimate with an origin and a destination: the origin being engineered organisms, which multiply to create the wearable within a 3D printed skins; and the destination being a unique planet in the solar system. The setting for this exploration is the solar system where, with the exception of planet Earth, no life can exist. The series represents the classical elements understood by the ancients to sustain life (earth, water, air and fire), and offers their biological counterpart in the form of microorganisms engineered to produce life-sustaining elements.

The wearables are designed to interact with a specific environment characteristic of their destination and generate sufficient quantities of biomass, water, air and light necessary for sustaining life: some photosynthesize converting daylight into energy, others bio-mineralize to strengthen and augment human bone, and some fluoresce to light the way in pitch darkness. Each wearable is designed for a specific extreme environment where it transforms elements that are found in the atmosphere to one of the classical elements supporting life: oxygen for breathing, photons for seeing, biomass for eating, biofuels for moving, and calcium for building.

Cristina Parreno: Tectonics of Transparency

Cristina Parreño Alonso is a Lecturer in The School of Architecture and Planning at MIT since 2010. She holds a Masters and Bachelor degree in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) where she graduated with honors.

She is a licensed architect in Spain and UK, with ten years of professional experience working in Madrid and London. Some of the projects she has been responsible as project Director with FOA include: Hotel MASAVEU in Gijon; Ravensbourne, College of Media and Design in London and the Forensic Institute for el Campus de la Justicia de Madrid which she also oversaw on site.

This exhibition brings together the work of four artists who all explore notions of beauty and alienation, attraction and repulsion and the otherworldly in their use of materials and form.

The works of acclaimed artist Kate MccGwire use the language of natural materials to attract and repel in equal measure. Her feathered sculptures have a constant sense of ‘otherness’ to them, at once seducing and disturbing the viewer with their strange familiarity. This abject beauty is integral to MccGwire’s practice, where bodily forms reference both the beauty of the natural world and its darker undercurrents. For this exhibition MccGwire will be showing several pieces including ‘Sluice’ a remarkable floor installation made of 4000 feathers.

Medway based artist and milliner Zara Carpenter will be showing her first major sculptural work ‘Persephone’ which explores the acceptance of ones own mortality and the ageing process and the desire to leave something beautiful behind. The work uses gathered and found objects including silk flowers, birds wings and insects to investigate themes of metamorphosis.

Kerry Howley is a contemporary jewellery artist fascinated by the power materials have to influence the wearers emotional response and particularly how these can be conflicting. She uses familiar forms yet works with materials that both fascinate, attract and repulse, turning discarded hair into exquisite yet unsettling adornment.

Tessa Farmer creates intricate miniature fairy sculptures made from insect carcasses, plant roots and other found natural materials. Microscopic battles between insects and tiny winged skeletal humanoids are both sinister and bewitching and offer a glimpse of an apocalyptic microscopic underworld.

An exquisite selection of artefacts including seldom seen Victorian mourning and hair jewellery has been kindly loaned by the Guildhall Museum from their collections as part of the exhibition.

Medway based artist Cormac McManigan who’s work is inspired by nature, is showing two stag beetle pieces for the show, carved and cast in bronze and made specially for the exhibition, the pieces are displayed in antique specimen drawers and can also be worn as jewellery.

Light Installation by Pangenerator

panGenerator has been invited by Copernicus Science Center (pl: Centrum Nauki Kopernik) to create an unique experience for the new media and technology – oriented Transformations Festival( pl: Przemiany Festiwal ). Given the central idea of this years edition – empowering people via new tools such as 3d printing and new collaboration frameworks, we decided to implement idea that we came up few years ago. We’ve been tired of interactive installations driven by the complexed, centralised software and hardware and strived for something that generates intricate emergent behaviours based on very simple and autonomous building blocks. And that’s how CONSTELLACTION was born.

Technical implementation.
The main, and only component of this interactive installation/experience is small, vacuum formed tetrahedron. Inside there is a custom made electronics driven by ATtiny24A microcontroller which had all of the things we were looking for – it was working with voltages as low as 1.8V, consumed small amounts of current and had enough i/o pins. For light detection we’ve used three standard photoresistors, each pointed to corresponding face and the same amount of SMD LED’s were used for producing light. On top of that we’ve added a tiny buzzer making some noise along with the blink. As for power supply two CRC2032 batteries were used, and thanks to heavy power consumption optimisations (such as utilising watchdog timer) the tetrahedrons are working even today – a month after the event.

100 Years of Swiss Design

Schaudepot is the name given by the Museum für Gestaltung to its new place in the Toni-Areal in Zurich West where exhibitions are shown and the over 500 000 objects that make up its Poster, Design, Applied Art and Graphics Collections are united under one roof. For the first time, guided tours through the archives enable the general public to see these internationally significant collections.
“100 Years of Swiss Design” is the opening exhibition held in the Schaudepot and at the same time the first showing on this very broad scale of the achievements of Swiss design.

A light switch, seating or sneakers – design from Switzerland has always been regarded as honest, precise, unfussy and user- friendly. This look at one hundred years of design history leads along locally anchored traditions to the design approaches of modernism and the tasks currently facing a globally networked generation of designers. With more than 800 objects from the Design Collection, the largest collection of Swiss design world-wide, the opening exhibition in the Schaudepot presents the first comprehensive show of Swiss design achievements. Everyday objects as well as iconic pieces of furniture by Le Corbusier, Max Bill, Hans Bellmann or Willy Guhl are shown in the form of sketches, prototypes, models, advertising films and photographs, opening up new perspectives of Switzerland as a design country.

Reexamining the fountain: In contemporary urban as well as cultural discussions we see a renaissance of the idea of common space, in german either translated as „Allmende“ or „Gemeinschaft“ depending on a relationship towards (city) space or social structures. This is related to the dipole of the private vs. the public as the two dominant categories of the 20th century. Now in the 21st century we find many ways of being together as part of daily life, be it through social media or through community gardens or similar locally rooted projects.

On the other hand we tend to take for granted many achievements inherited from previous generations’ common efforts, without giving them a second thought. One of these heritages are public infrastructures.

The excellent quality of water coming from the tap is one of these neglected public goods. While international companies secure access to water as part of their economic models, in western cities this good is mostly distributed freely. In Montreal, water is even delivered free to most residential users.

The project wishes to re-address the notion of the public good by celebrating free access to it. the fountain house is to be a place for this celebration to find a place and a shape. To give it a presence in public-shared city spaces.

The Fountain House, with it’s open ground plan, overlapping archways for entering and accessible rooftop offers a space for various kinds of public use. It creates a new centre of attraction, a place to be around, to be in, to discover. This node structures the space and still allows surrounding programmes.

From October 25, 2014 to February 22, 2015, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will continue to commemorate its 30th anniversary with Musings on a Glass Box, a new installation created especially for the occasion by the internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary design studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

The Fondation Cartier building designed by Jean Nouvel will be used as raw material for their work, a first in the history of the institution. Musings on a Glass Box is a complex work occupying the entire ground floor of the Fondation Cartier, where a disturbance in the ceiling will trigger a surprising reaction. The result is an immersive environment, including an integral acoustic component by American composer David Lang and sound designer Jody Elff, that works with the building’s architecture to raise questions about transparency, perception, and one’s relation to space.

Musings on a Glass Box
« Jean Nouvel’s distinctive glass exhibition spaces in the Fondation Cartier have been a provocation to artists and curators for two decades, upending the conventions of the white box gallery and pushing the limits of architecture. The large, transparent walls of the building were at the forefront of glass technology in the ‘90s, aspiring to one of Modernism’s highest goals: to dematerialize the wall and seamlessly connect interior to exterior.

Musings on a Glass Box empties the ground floor galleries in order to put them on display. Their visual and acoustic qualities are heightened through a few strategically placed interventions in the building’s plumbing, electrical, and facade systems. Using a cliché of time lapsed and the appearance of neglect, the project begins with a single, mischievous leak from the ceiling. A response ensues with the aid of a bucket, a chorus, sensors, robotics, remote communications, video, and real-time sound processing. The two ground floor galleries interconnect in a feedback loop. Small gestures in the large gallery are amplified in the smaller one, making the familiar seem uncanny and turning the banal into the grotesque. »

Beyond The Wall: Libeskind Design and Cosentino Group

Beyond The Wall and is a remarkable result of the ongoing collaboration between Libeskind Design and Cosentino Group. A temporary version of this sculpture was showcased in Milan’s Statale University during Milan’s Design Week 2013.

Beyond the Wall, based on the infinite possibilities of the spiral, is a unique structure and is the first to be created using Dekton® by Cosentino.It is not a traditional spiral with a single center and axis, but a contemporary spiral which opens a plurality of directions along many different trajectories; a polycentric spiral, propulsively twisting to a dramatic zenith. Beyond the Wall shows how this ultracompact material can succeed in cladding a contemporary and complex architectural facade.

In this final version Dekton® surfaces are employed in all exterior facades, interior walls and in all floors. The whitest finish of Dekton®, Zenith, is the chosen range for the facades and walls, in contrast with the perfect black colour of the Sirius finish, chosen for the floors of the impressive 8,5 meter high polycentric spiral.

Few artists inflame debate like Allen Jones. Celebratory, satirical and boldly inventive, his work embraces popular culture and has in turn influenced everything from design to film and fashion.

This long-overdue appraisal spans the entire career of British Pop artist Allen Jones, from the 1960s (when alongside peers like Hockney and Caulfield he was closely associated with the rise of Pop Art) to the present day.

Killer Heels explores fashion’s most provocative accessory. From the high platform chopines of sixteenth-century Italy to the glamorous stilettos on today’s runways and red carpets, the exhibition looks at the high-heeled shoe’s rich and varied history and its enduring place in our popular imagination.

As fashion statement, fetish object, instrument of power, and outlet of artistic expression for both the designer and the wearer, throughout the ages the high-heeled shoe has gone through many shifts in style and symbolism. Deadly sharp stilettos, architecturally inspired wedges and platforms, and a number of artfully crafted shoes that defy categorization are featured among the more than 160 historical and contemporary heels on loan from designers, from the renowned Brooklyn Museum costume collection housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and from the Bata Shoe Museum. Designers and design houses represented in Killer Heels include Manolo Blahnik, Chanel, Salvatore Ferragamo, Zaha Hadid X United Nude, Iris van Herpen X United Nude, Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, André Perugia, Prada, Elsa Schiaparelli, Noritaka Tatehana, Vivienne Westwood, and Pietro Yantorny.

Presented alongside the objects in the exhibition are six specially commissioned short films inspired by high heels. The filmmakers are Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh, Zach Gold, Steven Klein, Nick Knight, Marilyn Minter, and Rashaad Newsome.

Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe is organized by Lisa Small, Curator of Exhibitions, Brooklyn Museum. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

SOUND OF LIGHT

Imagine hearing the colours you perceive.

SOUND of LIGHT is a synesthetic sculpture which interprets and dynamically transforms sunlight into audio frequencies. It is a site specific installation designed for the former music pavilion in Hamm, Germany, which was built in 1912.

A high-quality digital camera mounted on the top of the structure films the sky and divides it into six colours – RGB and CMY. The six hanging, coloured columns of the pneumatic structure – which stand for the primary RGB (red/green/blue) and secondary CMY (cyan/magenta/yellow) colour models – are designed to receive different frequencies and convert them from visible to audible sensory input. A series of woofers is fixed directly on the bottom of each column and convert the whole architecture into a giant vibrating loudspeaker.

SOUND of LIGHT is a composition of hue, saturation, and light. By mixing sound and architecture, the audience experience a unique oneiric reality through the superimposition of colours, shapes, sounds and vibrations. Visitors can also discover their own concert by changing their point of view – an individual spectrum.

SOUND of LIGHT is a joint project of Marco Barotti and Plastique Fantastique for Urban Lights Ruhr 2014 in Hamm.

Ancient Chaos by The Principals

ANCIENT CHAOS – Commissioned by Sonos to create a sound reactive installation in collaboration with the musician Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), The Principals created a 16′ tall canopy, 8′ wide by 36′ long covering the performance and grand stand seating area of the private workspace collective Neuehouse. Inspired by the work of Arthur Rimbaud, The Principals chose the name Ancient Chaos, a phrase from his poem Matinée d’Ivresse which speaks to a basic force of wonder within all of us at the hidden patterns of nature. The installation, both a sonic composition and a physical structure, creates sounds that verge on the architectural and architecture that verges on the fluid.

Created using a unique system developed by The Principals, the canopy is composed of 6000 individual pieces of silver-coated mylar “quilted” together and driven by a series of hi-powered stepper motors. Using a custom spectrum analyzer/motor driver system, The Principals split out a series of sound frequencies from Hynes’ composition as well as ambient sounds to control individual panels of the structure. On the opening evening, after a panel discussion with The Principals and New Yorker Music Critic Sasha Frere-Jones, Hynes performed his composition live directly linked to the installation.

MIA&D Fair, the photography and design art fair, was conceived by Fabio Castelli. The aim was to highlight photography and other artistic mediums. Design came very natural, because they are linked and because it is emphasized by the other arts. What is the link between Milano and Singapore? While Milano is a great place for art, and Singapore a place where things are expanding. Asia has a great market for art and some of the most interesting things come from there.

So, for those who were wondering – there are some great reasons for which Singapore was chosen. 50% of the exhibitors are Western, and the other 50% are Asian. It’s a good mix for the public who can get to see different directions in the artistic scene.

Shamees Aden is a London born researcher and a multidisciplinary designer, exploring the potential of how these new scientific practices, could impact future designs.

Collaborating with scientists in the laboratory Shamees seeks to envisage and propose product concepts that communicates the complex research subject matter. Engaging with the scientists work to visualise the exciting future potential of these new technologies.

These encounters results in films, probes and images that illustrate and inspire the potential application of these future living technologies. Opening up conversations about the social and ethical implication of these emerging technologies in future designs.

The Amoeba Trainer

The Amoeba surface-adapting trainer is a conceptual prototype that seeks to probe the future of new materials derived from Protocells.

The study of protocells is a new and emerging science that has the potential to drastically revolutionise the way we make materials. Essentially protocells blur the gap between the non-living and the living. Engineering the emergence of life from lifeless liquid chemicals manufactured artificially in the laboratory could provide the building blocks to create a new-made nature.

She believes that we are on the cusp of a material revolution led by emerging living technologies. Science is becoming the future designer’s toolbox. She is currently working scientist Dr Martin Hanczyc from the University of Southern Denmark to fabricate a tangible trainer for 2050

“Bronze Age collection contains all hand-crafted pieces, using traditional skills that once underpinned our very survival, each piece a manually intensive work and formed from the material that represents the dawn of civilisation. For this project I wanted to create something totally opposite to the technology driven trends based on the emergence of new digital tools such as 3d printing. I like the idea that bronze is precious and is therefor implicitly sustainable, it is either preserved or remelted but never discarded, who knows maybe these pieces contain a couple of remelted ancient bronze swords!” Says Frank Tjepkema, lead designer and founder of Tjep.Alongside the new collection, Tjep. will be exhibiting other recent works such as Il Treno, and Tjep.’s unique jewelry line.

Reflecting on the contemporary conditions emerging between the digital and the physical realms, the collaboration of Winderen and Fornes collapses sound, light and form in an object with intrinsic sensorial behaviors, inviting visitors to question the properties of matter and the built environment surrounding us. The installation is a vibrating sound experiment that aims to transform the architecture into animated sensible form. David Chipperfield Installation at Mies van der Rohe Neue Nationalgalerie

The public opening event for this long-awaited exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin will take place on 1 October at 20:00.

The exhibition uses 144 spruce trunks, each just over 8 meters in length and weighing between half a tonne and a tone, with diameters between 30cm and 50cm. They are fixed in position at the ceiling with brackets and rest on plates, evenly distributing their weight. The brackets are accommodated within the grid of the ceiling, using perforations which Mies van der Rohe originally intended as anchor points for hanging artworks.

Chamber, a new boutique of limited edition design, objects and art, opened in September 2014 in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. The space’s unique concept and retail experience is the vision of Argentinian-born Founder Juan Garcia Mosqueda. Critically acclaimed architectural practice MOS has designed the interior of the space, which will be located underneath the High Line in the HL23 building, designed by Neil Denari. Every two years, Mosqueda will choose a different designer or creative to curate 100 objects for the space, bringing their unique viewpoint to Chamber through specially-commissioned works, and rare and vintage items. Collection #1 is being curated by Dutch designers Studio Job.

Gala Ferandez at Marion Friedmann Gallery

The UPCOMING EXHIBITION – OUT OF THE CAGE, presented by Marion Friedmann Gallery is an experimental glass-blowing project, lead by Gala Fernandez and realized with the skilled glass-blowers of the acclaimed glass manufacturer NOUVEL Studio in México City.
The liquid glass is blown into various shaped and sized birdcages serving as the moulds for this process. Once the housings for colorful birds, the cages have transcended into objects and containers, where new life has been blown into them. Now they hold the colorful glass, reminiscent of the birds themselves. The objects are a result of the interaction of the hot fluid glass with the moulds: the final pieces carrying the marks and history of both their former existences.

The project questions the status of confinement versus refuge. A cage can be conceived as imprisonment or a shelter for comfort. The glass works subtly capture this essence of limitation, protection and custody in a very imaginative fashion.

Also exhibited at the show will be FOCO ROJO, a rug by Méxican Designer Ariel Rojo depicting an aerial view of México City by night, which will provide an impressive backdrop within the exhibition space and will set the scene for the glass objects as well as pointing out their rich national provenance.

Cristina Grajales Gallery and Salon 94 are pleased to present Functional Sculpture / Sculptural Furniture by Chilean-born, New York-based Sebastian Errazuriz. The dual exhibitions act as mirrors, remodeling known artworks into functional design and cabinets into theatrical, sculptural stages. Re-visualizing and re-engineering the familiar pieces of our lives, Errazuriz turns them around and backwards, reflecting one another.

Errazuriz co-opts the standard design objects of our daily lives – a bike, a lamp, a table, a door, a swingset – and asks viewers to look again, to linger a little longer, and to question our accustomed design. Errazuriz re-makes familiar objects, adding humor, darkness, profanity, shock, provocation and obsession. His interventions include: a lamp made by replacing the head of a taxidermied chicken with a lightbulb; a racing motorcycle where the engine doubles as an open casket for a small bird; swapping out the seat of a playground swingset for a child-size wheelchair. The irreverent and shocking functional objects, can also be seen as memento mori furniture – works about mortality and our fragile bodies. There is often a wink and homage to period style and art historical icons.

At once anarchic and collectible, Schobinger’s work unites these materials to create hybrid jewels that irreverently express their provenance while challenging conventional histories of body adornment.

Henry sits on a beach, remembering and imagining stories and incidents from his life. Tormented by his father’s suicide, his own disfunctional family history and his failure as a writer, hallucinations and reality merge as he attempts to stoke the fire of his creativity.

First broadcast on radio in 1959, Embers takes us on a journey into the haphazard world of Henry’s imagination, a world of ever-shifting mental leaps, ruminations and ambiguities where creative storytelling and unfinished memories both real and unreal coalesce into one. Was Henry’s father washed out to sea whilst taking his evening swim, or did he commit suicide?

In the wonderful and preserved surroundings of La Creuse, Vincent Dubourg chose a land of freedom. Far away from the pressure of space and time, he opens up on contact with the material, in a workshop which he conceived and where he developed a personal practice that restores the dialogue between sculpture and design. A unique construction, that the young founders of Carpenters Workshop Gallery wanted to promote beyond our frontiers.

Nature inspires him, he tries to seize the energy throught a sophisticated composition of the whole and empty. He metamorphoses most familiar items into art pieces, giving them an immaterial dimension, an added soul. Trained in exact metal work technics, passionate observer of cabinetmaking, Vincent Dubourg establishes a dialogue between the two. The paradoxical deconstruction of his art pieces, translates the methodical meaning of his art of building.

Giopato & Coombes. Two people, in love with “making” projects. An architect and a designer. A woman and a man, she is Italian and he is English. Two individuals, intuition and reason: a multitude of visions. Contamination and fusion. One studio: design and architecture, graphics and production, because interdisciplinarity is the fuel that generates creative development.

When approaching a new project they immerse themselves in the perspectives and perceptions of both the client and it’s customer, in order to find new solutions that can create meaningful connections between the two.
Clients that have already commissioned the studio include Living Divani, Kenzo, Design Within Reach, Fiam Italia, Lema, Miniforms, Industreal and Glass Idromassaggi. They are regularily involved in design conferences and their products can be seen in exhibitions and publications around the world.

Dominic Wilcox at London Design Festival

The driverless glass car prototype has only a bed inside, where the passenger can sleep while the car takes them to their destination. The car combines the hand made process of glass work with modern and future technologies to create a proposal of how transport could be in the middle of the 21st century.

“I propose that in the year 2059 it will be statistically proven that it is safer to ride in a computer controlled ‘driverless’ vehicle than to ride in a human driven vehicle. In fact in 2058 there were no collisions on the Digital M1 motorway where only driverless vehicles are allowed.

This means that driverless vehicles will not require the typical safety equipment we see on current cars such as air bags and bumpers. We will simply require a living space on wheels. The technology of the motor and driverless, automated navigation system will be held within a standard, modular chassis, on to which any living space shell can be built. I am presenting one example of the type of vehicles possible and have designed a prototype for a driverless car made from stained glass. This vehicle is a single person ‘sleeper car’, the occupant can sleep on a bed while the car travels to the destination of choice.

Candela by Felix de Pass at V&A Museum

Candela is an immersive installation at the V&A for the London Design Festival designed in collaboration with graphic designer Michael Montgomery and ceramicist Ian McIntyre. This project is the first time the three designers have come together to form multidisciplinary team de Pass, Montgomery, McIntyre.

Due to the light sensitivity of the medieval textiles on display, the V&A Tapestries Gallery is one of the darkest spaces in the museum. The installation comprises a large rotary machine that sits centrally, hovering just off the gallery floor. As the face of the machine revolves it passes through a light source that charges its surface, in turn emitting this energy as after glow.

The continual revolution of the machine creates a perpetual ebb and flow of light-patterns travelling across the structure. This rich layering effect plays with the memory of the phosphorescent material also used on the dials of sponsor Panerai’s watches. The title of the installation, Candela, comes from the standard unit of luminous intensity: a common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela.
