For this year’s Biennial Dan Colen has come up with a group of sculptures that recount a kind of headlong race and the breathlessness that follows. Appropriating mass culture phenomena, ephemeral graffiti and everyday language, he turns them into sculptures, paintings and installations that inject a real sense of magic into the daily round. Sometimes controversial but always infinitely poetic, Colen’s works teeter on the brink between expressive urgency and surface perfection.
