” The future may be bright, but can also be very dark,” says Martijn Van Strien , Design Academy Eindhoven graduate , who chose the second option to design his collection Dystopian Brutalist Outerwear .
Albert Einstein stated that in times of crisis , imagination is more effective than the intellect. Van Strien combines : “Faced with the economic crisis and the decline of our society , life on this planet will be hard and unsafe . People need a protective coating to protect them from everyday life. ” His collection , designed to challenge the severity and rigor that arise, is made from a single piece of thick canvas with straight cuts and taped seams easy to wear.
The layers have an austere feeling, a linear appearance and, above all , a cold , distant, mysterious and sober feeling . ” This series of coats explores the possibilities of combining very durable materials , but low cost, fast and efficient sewing techniques. ”
The forms are inspired by the brutal, architectural style associated with the ideologies of social utopias promoted in the decades of 50 and 70, when he played with patterns of repetitive angular geometries .
The collection was exhibited at the Design Academy Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week . Martijn Van Strien obtained Keep an Eye Grant Award for this project.
