The years shall run like rabbits is the latest exhibition of artist Hellen van Meene at Yancey Richardson Gallery. What is interesting about her portraits is the fact that they present characters, girls and animals, that have a state of fragility and that are very intimate, without any visible effort, as if the photographer would create such a confortable environment for work, that blows away any possible distance between the camera and the subject.
The recent presence of dogs in her works underline a relationship between the humans and animals, reminding of famous portraits from the art history: dogs were present in pantings together with the family. What is important here is the fact that these animals are also main characters and their presence in the works gives a new dimension to the photos, as if there is a secured space. There is a simplicity in the light and settings that underline the fact that they are quite disturbing without any obvious effort, as if the subjects are so strong that they can put you through an entire range of thoughts.
