Design Museum’s main exhibition of the spring season delves into the fantastic world of Henrik Vibskov, a pioneer of contemporary Danish fashion design and a boundless inventor. This exhibition will bring to Helsinki the whole creative process of this rising star of contemporary fashion design and his cross-disciplinary fervour.

Originally from the Danish countryside, Henrik Vibskov (1972) graduated from Central Saint Martins in London in 2001. Since then, he has designed over 20 collections to become one of the most important Nordic fashion designers on the international scene. He has his own Henrik Vibskov brand, which is sold all over the world.

Although Vibskov creates fashions for both men and women, he also designs collections of fashionable accessories in a playful spirit. Vibskov is also known for his installations in the visual arts, which often serve as the sets of fashions shows. This widely talented designer has also created stage sets and has been a drummer in a band called Trentemøller.

Curator Suvi Saloniemi of Design Museum, who is responsible for curating the exhibition, describes Henrik Vibskov with the words ‘original’, ‘unbridled’, ‘testing boundaries’, ‘wild’, and even ‘strange’. “Our aim is to bring the unique world of Henrik Vibskov to be studied by the public,” she adds. “We want to delve inside the head of this designer. Sometimes we display only the results of a designer’s work, but with Vibskov we will show the endless abundance of his ideas and the machinery of his creativity. The exhibition is above all a celebration of creativity and creative thinking,” Saloniemi points out.

The core of the Design Museum exhibition consists of Vibskov’s latest work and his solo exhibition Neck Plus Ultra, which was on tour in Paris and Copenhagen earlier this year. A new work to be shown by Vibskov in Helsinki is an installation displayed a week before the exhibition at the Paris Fashion Week of 2014.

Vibskov was this year’s only Nordic designer of a men’s collection at the Paris World’s Fair. He was awarded the Söderberg Prize in 2011. Exhibitions of work by Vibskov have been on show at PS1, MoMA (New York), the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and the Röhsska Museum in Sweden, among other venues.
