David LaChapelle is back in France! And the great part is, not that you needed that, the force and the new ideas he comes with: first of all he gets into art history, starting from Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. The photographer is famous for being interested in stars and what he does now is to reinterpret the way the saints are represented. And this comes with a question: are they stars? What does this word mean? LaChapelle transforms these Bible characters into contemporary ones, where the puts their heads and hands into boxes, taking only few details that would have the force to express the character.

And he mixes together the saints with Lady Di, Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio, John F. Kennedy giving a new meaning to the concept. Looking at the saints and stars, all broken, it might make you think about the fall of religion and the decay of stars, all exhibited in plain simple cardboard boxes. Indeed, it is an exhibition that gives a new dimension to fame.
Also, he uses a different medium, and it is pleasurable to see the way he expands his way of working.

As for the second part of the exhibition, LaChapelle uses pretty much the same themes, where kitsch is extreme and where there is a splash of colours everywhere. But after seeing the celebrities in cardboard boxes, simplified as much as possible and the result being so effective in revealing the emotional response of the audience, you might not be so impressed by the photos. Still, the details are amazing:
