LOS ANGELES – The nominees for Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize were announced Wednesday night with 66-year-old veteran rocker David Bowie getting the nod for his album, “The Next Day,” along with a list of acts young enough to call him dad.

Joining Bowie are Laura Marling, Foals, Disclosure, James Blake, Rudimental, Jake Bugg,Laura Mvula, Villagers, Jon Hopkins and Savages. But British odds maker William Hill are calling Bowie and Arctic Monkeys 4 to 1 favorites to walk away with the top prize.
According to the Mercury Prize website, the prize for Best Album is given each year “solely to champion music in the UK.” Past winners include Portishead, for their album, “Dummy,” PJ Harvey, a two-time winner for “Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea” and “Let England Shake,” and Arctic Monkeys, who took the prize in 2006 for “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.”
Released in March, Bowie’s 25th album, “The Next Day,” received stellar reviews, with Rolling Stone calling it “a triumphant album.” It represents a comeback for the beloved artist who, in 2004, suffered a heart attack. At the time, many believed the previous year’s “Reality” would be his last record.
“This year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist celebrates a fascinating year for British and Irish music marked by a wonderful range of musical voices – urgent, reflective, upbeat and tender, acoustic and electronic, and all with something intriguing to say,” judging panel chair Simon Firth told Ireland’s Independent.
The winner will be announced October 30 during a ceremony at the Roundhouse in London.
